Truxton Academy Charter School

Truxton Academy Charter School Truxton Academy Charter School opened in the Fall of 2019. We are the first rural elementary charter school in New York State.

Truxton Academy Charter School is located in Truxton, New York, a small rural town surrounded by farms and forest lands. Serving students in grades K thru 2 our first year, we opened in the Fall of 2019. We will add a grade each school year until we are a full elementary school serving children from grades K-6. Families, community members, and local business owners have expressed a need for a bett

er education that is local, affordable, and unique, to better the future of our children and our rural community. We Are excited that we have been able to meet these needs by establishing a charter school that actively engages students in meaningful hands-on projects where they will apply new knowledge and approach learning with excitement. Students at Truxton Academy develop a sense of inquiry and self-confidence that promotes high academic achievement and lifelong learning. Truxton Academy is constructing a STEM focused project-based curriculum involving the local agricultural community. As we grow our Rural Life Lab, students get to experience unique learning experiences. In addition to a focus on strong classroom communities, students have opportunities to work and play in multi-age and ability groups in a larger "School Family." Through these experiences, they learn to respect and support each other’s skills, differences, needs and backgrounds. Frequent family and community involvement encourage civic engagement. Students and teachers work with higher education and professional advisors from Syracuse University, SUNY Cortland, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and SUNY Morisville. These college partnerships are integral to expanding and enriching a meaningful place-based curriculum. Rural community and culture is important to the Truxton Academy Charter School. Students who are educated in safe, structured environments that improve social-emotional competencies, do better academically. Teachers, parents, and students work together to create a School Family that values positive character traits including honesty, kindness, and courage. In our first year, health and fitness activities are provided. We know that arts and physical education have favorable associations with students’ cognitive skills, attitudes and their academic achievement. Choral, instrumental and fine arts will be added in subsequent years. We also offer Spanish language instruction for all students starting in Kindergarten. Studies show early language learning helps develop students’ brains in ways which benefit them for life. We are one of the few elementary schools which include Spanish language instruction at such as early age in a rural setting. Truxton Academy Charter School aims to create an elementary school of excellence and choice.

🐝 A buzz-worthy addition to our campus! 🐝

This week, we welcomed Blue Orchard Bees to Truxton Academy! These gentle native pollinators are incredible helpers in gardens, orchards, and natural spaces. Unlike honeybees, Blue Orchard Bees are solitary and non-aggressive, making them a fascinating species for our students to learn about up close.

Our students will have the opportunity to observe their life cycle, learn about the important role pollinators play in our ecosystem, and discover how even the smallest creatures can make a big impact on the world around us.

From goats and chickens to chicks, trout, and now bees, learning at Truxton Academy is always hands-on and connected to nature. We can't wait to see our newest campus residents get to work! 🌼🌱🐝

At Truxton, caring for animals isn't just about our goats and chickens. 🐐🐔

This week, our students became moth rescuers! When we spotted a moth in need of a little help, our kids jumped right in carefully moving it to a safe spot and making sure it could continue on its journey.

Big or small, furry or winged, every living thing matters. These little moments help teach kindness, compassion, and respect for the world around us. 🦋💚

Spring at Truxton has been busy in the best way 🌱🐥

Our classrooms have been full of tiny peeps as we welcomed baby chicks into the world. Lots of excitement, gentle hands, and big smiles while students kept a close eye on every little crack and wiggle. There’s been a whole lot of “is it happening yet?!” and celebrating when it finally does.

Outside, things have been just as busy in the best way. Our kids have been dreaming up and designing their own playgrounds, then teaming up to actually build them. There’s been a lot of creativity, problem-solving, and those classic “wait…let’s try it this way instead” moments (which usually end up being the best part).

In between all of that, we’ve been out in the garden digging, planting, watering, and definitely getting a little muddy. There’s something pretty special about watching kids check on something they planted and seeing it start to grow.

It’s hands-on, a little messy, and full of those unplanned moments that end up meaning the most and that’s where the magic really is!

Learning looks a little different here and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Our 3rd graders kicked off the first step of the Ice Cream Challenge this week learning the basics by making their very own plain vanilla ice cream! 🍦

Before the wild flavor ideas and creative recipes begin, students are starting with the science behind a classic. From measuring ingredients to watching liquid turn into a frozen treat, they’re getting hands-on experience with food science, teamwork, and agriculture right in the classroom.

We’re excited to be participating in the New York Agriculture in the Classroom Ice Cream Challenge, where students across New York create original ice cream recipes while learning about the dairy industry and agriculture.

This was just step one… and judging by the smiles, it was a pretty sweet start.

At our school, PE is about more than just staying active—it’s about building skills that last a lifetime.

Our students are learning activities they can carry with them far beyond the gym, like archery, fire building, and bike riding. These experiences teach focus, patience, independence, and confidence—all while getting kids moving and engaged in the outdoors.

There’s something powerful about watching a student hit their first target, safely build a fire, or gain the confidence to ride on their own. These are the kinds of moments that stick with them.

We’re proud to offer PE experiences that go beyond the traditional and help prepare our students for real life, not just recess.

There’s something special about learning by doing—and it’s happening all around our school every day.

From hands-on projects in the classroom to helping prep lunch in the kitchen, our students are building real-life skills alongside their academics. Whether they’re measuring ingredients, working as a team, or taking pride in contributing to our school community, these moments matter. They’re learning responsibility, cooperation, and confidence in ways that stick.

It’s not just about what they learn—it’s how they learn. And we love watching them grow through every hands-on experience. 🧑‍🍳🌱
