US 160 resurfacing in Tuba City area starting today April 6

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will begin work this week of April 6–10 to improve a 14‑mile stretch of US 160 in and east of Tuba City (mileposts 321–335). Drivers should expect delays and allow extra travel time during resurfacing, guardrail and drainage upgrades.

In Tuba City, work on multi‑lane sections is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Friday mornings until noon, with lane closures and traffic shifts. On two‑lane sections east of Tuba City, flag crews and a pilot vehicle will direct traffic from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Friday mornings until noon.

ADOT is completing the $20.5 million project in partnership with the Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe. Construction is expected to be finished in fall 2026.

More information is available at azdot.gov/US160Improvements and AZ511.gov.

GOOD MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
While many of your vehicle’s powertrain components, such as the driveshaft and axle shafts, do not require much routine maintenance, there are a few parts that need periodic attention:

Check the engine oil level at every fuel fill and add oil if necessary.

About once a month, make sure all tires are inflated properly and check for any unusual wear or damage.

Have an underbody flushing performed approximately once a year.

The engine's exterior should be cleaned periodically. Buildup of oil and dirt can cause the engine to run hot or hide leaks.

Have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible if the 'Service Engine Soon' light illuminates.

Have your vehicle inspected immediately if the 'Service Engine Soon' light flashes rapidly. This indicates an engine misfire condition which may damage your engine and/or engine emission components.

Stay safe Navajo Nation and always buckle up.

Coolant vs Water in a Car Radiator

In an automotive cooling system, the working fluid must transfer heat efficiently, prevent corrosion, and operate safely under high temperature and pressure.
While plain water has good heat-absorbing ability, it cannot provide full protection required for modern engines.

📌Boiling and Freezing Characteristics

Water boils at 100 °C, but inside an engine the temperature can exceed this.
Engine coolant (ethylene glycol or propylene glycol mixture) raises the boiling point to about 120–130 °C and lowers the freezing point below −30 °C, ensuring stable operation in all climates.

👉 This prevents:

Overheating in traffic or heavy load

Coolant freezing and cracking engine parts

📌 Corrosion and Scale Protection

Plain water contains minerals and oxygen that cause:

Rust in radiator, water pump, and engine block

Scale deposits blocking radiator passages

Reduced heat transfer efficiency

Coolant includes corrosion inhibitors and anti-scale additives that:

Protect aluminum, iron, and copper components

Keep cooling passages clean

Extend radiator and engine life

📌 Lubrication of Cooling Components

Modern cooling systems rely on the water pump seal and bearings.
Water provides no lubrication, causing early pump failure.

Coolant contains lubricating additives that:

Protect pump seals

Reduce wear and leakage

Improve long-term reliability

📌Heat Transfer Stability

Although water absorbs heat quickly, coolant mixtures provide controlled and stable heat transfer without boiling, foaming, or forming steam pockets.
This ensures:

Uniform engine temperature

Better combustion efficiency

Reduced risk of head-gasket damage

✔ Best Practice Recommendation

For most vehicles, the correct mixture is:

50% Genuine Engine Coolant + 50% Distilled Water

This ratio provides:

Maximum thermal protection

Corrosion resistance

Long service life of radiator, pump, and engine
