💡 Let’s talk about disability etiquette!

A form of ableism is infantilizing disabled people or having lower expectations of them because of their disability. Being disabled does not mean someone needs to be treated like a child, spoken to differently, or praised for everyday activities.

For example, saying “Wow, you’re so brave for going to the grocery store by yourself!” may sound encouraging, but it can come across as patronizing when you wouldn’t say the same thing to a nondisabled person.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

🔹 Speak to adults with disabilities as adults.
🔹 Don’t assume someone needs things explained, simplified, or decided for them.
🔹 Avoid excessive praise for ordinary activities simply because a disabled person is doing them.
🔹 Focus on a person’s individual needs and preferences—not stereotypes about their disability.

Respect means recognizing disabled people as whole, capable individuals with the same right to autonomy, dignity, and respect as everyone else. 🙌

💡 Let’s talk about disability etiquette!

Yesterday, we talked about respectful language and the importance of speaking directly to people with disabilities.

Today, let’s talk about assumptions.

A disability does not automatically tell you what someone can or cannot do.

🔹 Don’t assume someone needs help.
🔹 Don’t assume someone wants help.
🔹 Don’t assume a person’s abilities based on how they look.
🔹 Don’t assume a disability is visible.
🔹 Don’t assume you know what’s best for someone else.

Instead, ask, listen, and respect the answer.

Good disability etiquette means recognizing that people with disabilities are the experts on their own needs, abilities, and boundaries.
Respect starts with letting people speak for themselves.

Many people use "cutesy" phrases thinking they are being polite, but these terms can actually be patronizing or harmful. Instead of euphemisms like "differently abled," "handi-capable," or "special needs," it is much better to just use direct, respectful words like disabled or person with a disability.

Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind:
🔹 Always speak directly to the person, not their companion.
🔹 Ask before offering help—don't just assume it's needed.
🔹 Respect personal space, including wheelchairs, canes, and service animals.

Language matters, and treating everyone with direct respect and autonomy goes a long way! 🙌

Every three years, Georgia updates its State Plan for Independent Living (SPIL)—the statewide roadmap that helps set priorities and guide independent living services for people with disabilities.

As part of Georgia's Independent Living Network, disABILITY LINK encourages people with disabilities, family members, advocates, and community members to share their experiences and ideas by completing the SPIL Needs Assessment Survey.

Your input will help identify the needs and priorities that will shape independent living services across Georgia for the next three years.

Scammers are becoming more convincing every day. They may pretend to be a family member, friend, employer, government agency, or even a trusted organization. One of the biggest red flags? They ask you to purchase gift cards as payment or to "help" them in an emergency.

Remember, legitimate businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits will never ask you to pay with gift cards.

Be on the lookout for these warning signs:
Someone pressures you to act immediately.
They ask you to keep the request a secret.
The email address, phone number, or text message seems unusual.
They ask you to buy gift cards and send the card numbers or photos of the back.

If something doesn't feel right, pause and verify. Contact the person or organization directly using a trusted phone number or website, not the contact information provided in the suspicious message.
