TOP 15 HOLIDAY HELPS: The following list contains suggestions that may be helpful in dealing with the holidays. Recognize that there may be numerous triggers that can cause temporary anxiety and deep sadness. Some of the ideas below can help you be prepared to work through these emotional moments.
1. Refrain from isolating. Being with others can help fend off loneliness and hopelessness.
2. Fill your time with healthy, mentally engaging activities. Some ideas are: a) Read b) Call friends occasionally, just to socialize. c) Spend time with trusted friends. They want to help. But you'll need to let them in and tell them what you need.
3. Design new holiday traditions. Experiment; it’s ok to change traditions from year to year. Think of ideas that sound fun and interactive so that your tradition includes others’ company.
4. Buy or make yourself some gifts – just for fun!
5. Decide in advance about whether or not to attend plays, recitals and other holiday programs.
6. Do not overcommit. It’s ok to say “no” to people. Just be honest and say that, ”The holidays are a little tough right now. But thanks for thinking of me.”
7. Let others know if you are comfortable talking about your loved one or other type of loss. They may be avoiding the topic to be sensitive to your feelings.
8. Attend functions with a close friend for support.
9. Leave parties early if you become uncomfortable.
10. Have a backup plan in mind if you’re not sure how an evening will work out.
11. Reduce stress. Shop online and direct ship gifts to recipients. Limit baking, cooking if these cause you stress.
12. Reduce the amount of people you send cards and gifts. Send cards early, before the season begins.
13. Get plenty of rest. Eat healthy. And get regular exercise to lift up your spirit. Exercising, within safe limits of your personal physical condition, can be a tremendous help! Vigorous exercise stimulates endorphins, which help to overcome depression.
14. Keep fresh flowers around.
15. Intentionally include some laughter in each day. Make a list of what makes you laugh, and plan to enjoy one or more of those things each day.
