Executive Summary
America had a chance to choose a different future — one rooted in peace, global cooperation, economic fairness, and racial justice.
That future was stolen in five feet and nine seconds at the 1944 Democratic National Convention, when a coordinated group of oligarchs, political bosses, and corporate donors executed a backroom coup to remove Vice President Henry A. Wallace from the ticket.
Wallace had the support of:
• 65% of Democratic voters
• Every Black delegate
• Every women’s organization
• The entire labor movement
But he did not have the support of the billionaire class or the party bosses.
Those men — the Ed Pauleys, the Hannegans, the Pendergast machine — shut down the convention, locked the doors, called the fire marshal, and forced a vote the next morning.
They replaced Wallace with Harry S. Truman, a man hand-picked by the same Kansas City machine described by TIME Magazine as “as corrupt as any in American history.”
Had Wallace remained Vice President, he would have become President 265 days later when FDR died — and the world would look radically different today.
