My office has been receiving several inquiries about the traffic interruption on Tanque Verde Road, just west of Bear Canyon. This construction has been going on for a few months and is part of a sewer expansion for the Mason Ranch apartment construction, which was authorized in 2021 after a unanimous vote of mayor and council. We felt this rezoning was compatible with neighboring developments.
There are two active permits involved, one permit is from Pima County Wastewater, and the other permit is from the City of Tucson to allow the traffic interruption. The original permit was issued on November 10 of last year and set to expire on February 9 to accommodate work that was expected to end January 30. A sixty-day extension was granted February 2. A third extension was granted and is set to expire June 9.
I spoke to John Krause, the Vice President of construction for MC Companies, the developer for the project. He reported to me that there were multiple uncatalogued utility lines that already existed when they uncovered the substrate of the street. These uncatalogued utility lines included gas, electric, and telephone. Some of them date back to World War II. When they uncovered them, this caused numerous complications with expanding the sewer lines.
Ultimately, they changed their plans and had to move where they located the sewage line. This caused a delay and then they struck an uncatalogued gas line. The gas line strike left four customers without service for about a half day. While this was a relatively small number, it was an inconvenience for those residents. I heard from them and that’s what prompted me to call the company.
We felt it was really important to reach out to the company and let them know the concerns of the neighbors. I have authorized the Department of Transportation and Mobility to give them a night permit to accelerate construction. We really want to see them off the street before the end of May. I also advised them that if they did not complete the work by June 9, I would have no choice but to recommend that their permit not be extended. Both the project manager and Mr. Krause were very responsive to our ask that the project be complete as soon as possible. I understand the incredible inconvenience the gas line and traffic issues have caused neighbors. My office is working on it.
