Please come out! I'm very proud of these projects and the neighbors deserve a lot of credit for helping get the ball over the line on this. Thank you.

BIG weekend at the park, neighbors, with two reasons to celebrate:

Friday, May 29 | 5:30 PM
Join the city as we celebrate the completion of improvements to our park, including pickleball courts and a refreshed children's playground (where we'll meet).

Saturday, May 30 | 9:00 AM
Be there for the unveiling of the brand-new basketball courts, dedicated in honor of Judith “Mama” Blair.

This Saturday is especially meaningful as we thank Coach Joseph Blair, a former Wildcat and generous community champion, for helping bring this incredible new amenity to our park.

Let’s show up BIG for the Blair family and celebrate what community can make possible. See you there!

Hello all, I know this is quite a bummer. But the silver lining is, we should see Fort Lowell open later this month; general reminder that we discourage use of glass containers in pool areas. We will try and find out how the glass got there.

Temporary closure of Udall Pool and Splash Pad, located at 7200 E. Tanque Verde Rd.

Staff discovered glass in the pool, which requires the pool to be drained and thoroughly cleaned to ensure guest safety. The earliest the pool could reopen is Friday. We will send another update once the pool has reopened.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Pima County Wastewater has begun sewer line work on East Speedway near the Far Horizons community.

The contractor for this work is Gardner Construction, and they are realigning the main sewer line on Speedway, and their work should take around 3 weeks to complete with the estimated end date being May 22nd, but they will try to move the date up if they can.

My office has been receiving several inquiries about the traffic interruption on Tanque Verde Road, just west of Bear Canyon. This construction has been going on for a few months and is part of a sewer expansion for the Mason Ranch apartment construction, which was authorized in 2021 after a unanimous vote of mayor and council. We felt this rezoning was compatible with neighboring developments.

There are two active permits involved, one permit is from Pima County Wastewater, and the other permit is from the City of Tucson to allow the traffic interruption. The original permit was issued on November 10 of last year and set to expire on February 9 to accommodate work that was expected to end January 30. A sixty-day extension was granted February 2. A third extension was granted and is set to expire June 9.

I spoke to John Krause, the Vice President of construction for MC Companies, the developer for the project. He reported to me that there were multiple uncatalogued utility lines that already existed when they uncovered the substrate of the street. These uncatalogued utility lines included gas, electric, and telephone. Some of them date back to World War II. When they uncovered them, this caused numerous complications with expanding the sewer lines.

Ultimately, they changed their plans and had to move where they located the sewage line. This caused a delay and then they struck an uncatalogued gas line. The gas line strike left four customers without service for about a half day. While this was a relatively small number, it was an inconvenience for those residents. I heard from them and that’s what prompted me to call the company.
We felt it was really important to reach out to the company and let them know the concerns of the neighbors. I have authorized the Department of Transportation and Mobility to give them a night permit to accelerate construction. We really want to see them off the street before the end of May. I also advised them that if they did not complete the work by June 9, I would have no choice but to recommend that their permit not be extended. Both the project manager and Mr. Krause were very responsive to our ask that the project be complete as soon as possible. I understand the incredible inconvenience the gas line and traffic issues have caused neighbors. My office is working on it.

A few of updates:

I just posted a very thorough update about the road closure, but to summarize: we’ve been in contact with the contractor, the developer, and the agencies that issued permits. I cannot stress that I’m working as fast as I can to end the traffic congestion.

As some of you have seen, Pima County Wastewater is replacing a main sewage line on Speedway West of Pantano. The permit for the road blockage is until May 22. We are working with the entities involved to ensure they make that deadline.

TPD is working with TFD on a chemical spill on Pima east of Craycroft. A pool company was involved in a motor vehicle accident and numerous gallons of muriatic acid spilled into the road. Craycroft is open now and Pima is still closed between Craycroft and Jefferson. We do not have a time frame on the closure.

Finally, a bone was found in the Tanque Verde wash near River and Craycroft. Initial analysis indicates the bone has been in the wash for at least 50 years. Several years ago, several pieces of human remains were found near this site. They were later considered or theorized to be part of an ancient burial ground.
