Our hearts are heavy as we join our community in mourning the tragic loss of Angel and Kayla (KJ) Manuel.

Angel was a beloved member of Indivisible Tohono, one of Emerge’s community partners, and a fierce advocate, leader, and caretaker. We have had the privilege of being in community with Angel and Kayla over the years, including joining Indivisible Tohono each June for the annual Tohono O’odham Nation Celebrates PRIDE event and gathering together for last year’s Trans+ Day of Remembrance. Their presence, care, and love for community were deeply felt in these spaces and beyond, and they will be dearly missed.

As a trans woman, Angel used her voice and leadership to help create spaces where people knew they were loved, supported, and had someone they could count on. Through her advocacy, civic engagement, leadership, and the countless ways she showed up for others, Angel poured so much of herself into her community. Her life reminds us that leadership is not only found in the spaces where decisions are made. But it is also found in the ways we care for one another, make room for others, and ensure people know they belong.

And through so many of these moments, Angel and Kayla were together. Their bond was unmistakable. Whether helping at PRIDE, showing up for community gatherings, or simply being present alongside one another, they brought a sense of love, connection, and care into the spaces they shared. Kayla was a familiar and helping presence at PRIDE, and together, they became part of the memories that make these community spaces so meaningful. Their absence will be deeply felt.

We extend our deepest love and care to their family, friends, our partners at Indivisible Tohono, the O’odham, and everyone grieving this tremendous loss.

Angel and Kayla, thank you for the love you gave, the community you helped build, and the lives you touched. May we honor you by continuing to care for one another and creating the kind of community you worked so hard to make possible.

You are loved. You are remembered. You will be deeply missed. 💜🦋🌵

Because of our incredible community, more than 100 families began the school year with the supplies they need to thrive.

Our Back To School event last month was made possible by a community that showed up in countless ways. From donating school supplies and responding when we shared our greatest needs, to preparing the space, welcoming families, helping participants choose their supplies, and stuffing backpacks, your generosity helped create an experience rooted in dignity, choice, and care.

For children whose lives have been impacted by domestic abuse, a backpack filled with school supplies is more than just notebooks and pencils. It's a reminder that their community believes in them. It helps restore a sense of normalcy, confidence, and excitement as they begin a new school year.

Thank you for showing up for children, families, and survivors. Domestic abuse is a community problem, and moments like these reinforce that communities are also part of the solution. Together, we're helping children begin the school year with the tools they need, the confidence to learn, and the knowledge that an entire community believes in them.

At Emerge, love is our commitment to transforming our community into one where all survivors can heal and thrive, free from violence. It calls us to stand with those who are hurting, to share the weight of their grief, and to speak clearly when violence threatens safety and belonging in our community.

Today, that commitment calls us to hold Tucson’s LGBTQIA+ community close. Our hearts ache for the loved ones of Vincent Anthony Siqueiros and Cameron Davis Capara, the Venture-N family, and everyone who is grieving, frightened, or struggling to make sense of this devastating act of violence. We join our community in mourning and recognize that many of the people we love may now feel less safe.

LGBTQIA+ spaces are more than businesses or places to gather. They are where people find friendship, chosen family, acceptance, joy, safety, and the freedom to exist fully as themselves. When one of these spaces is targeted, the harm reverberates far beyond its walls, leaving an entire community questioning whether the places where they have found belonging are still safe.

This tragedy joins a painful history of violence targeting places where LGBTQIA+ people gather. This year marks ten years since the attack at Pulse and nearly four years since the attack at Club Q. We are once again reminded that spaces of connection, authenticity, and joy have too often been targeted by those who seek to destroy what they represent.

At Emerge, we know violence does not occur in isolation. It is shaped by systems that treat some people’s safety and humanity as less worthy. LGBTQIA+ people deserve more than survival. They deserve to gather without fear, experience joy without apology, and live with dignity and belonging.

Emerge has long been dedicated to serving individuals and families impacted by domestic abuse. Over the past decade, we have also worked to build partnerships and programs that seek solutions at the intersection of domestic and community violence. This work is especially critical in a moment when gun violence has been so visible and devastating in our community.

We stand with our LGBTQIA+ community in grief, outrage, and love. We also recognize the strength of a community whose history is rooted in collective care, courage, survival, and the determination to protect one another. In this moment, may we hold one another close, check on those we love, make space for grief, and remain visible and united in our commitment to one another’s safety.

Emerge is committed to creating a future where healing is rooted in love, joy, and community. Through our collective commitment to safety and liberation, we work to create spaces where all survivors of violence, especially those from marginalized and vulnerable communities, belong and thrive.

The legacy of people of African descent is not only one of survival, but also one of creation, innovation, culture, care, joy, and dreams.

For generations, Black communities have reclaimed power through celebration, creativity, and connection. Black joy has never been separate from the struggle for justice. It has always been part of it—a practice of resistance, healing, and hope that protects the ability to dream, even when systems sought to limit what was believed to be possible.

Black joy can sound like laughter over shared meals.
It can move through rhythm, dance, and song.
It can live in the stories passed from one generation to the next.
It can bloom—loud, unapologetic, and whole.

Spaces that center Black healing and joy are sacred because they remind us that every person deserves the freedom not only to survive, but to dream, to create, to rest, to belong, and to flourish. Joy is not just an emotion, but a practice, a birthright, and nurturing that joy is part of the path toward liberation.

Today and every day, we celebrate the joy that continues to rise, the dreams that continue to inspire, and honor the beauty and brilliance of Black communities across the globe.

This , we honor the legacy and ongoing leadership of trans+ visionaries who have always carved paths toward safety, joy, and liberation, even in the face of harm.

Yet today, more than half of transgender and nonbinary people have experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetimes. Transwomen of color, especially Black trans women, face the highest risks, often while being denied access to support due to discrimination, bias, or misgendering.

At Emerge, we believe trans people deserve more than visibility. They deserve safety in practice, joy without condition, and systems grounded in responsibility and repair. True liberation means honoring every person’s right to be loved, to heal, and to thrive.

is a legacy of innovation—reimagining what care, belonging, and healing can look like. We carry that forward by listening deeply and showing up with love.

This month, and always, we honor trans history, celebrate trans communities, and recommit to building a community where trans people are safe, seen, and free.

08/26/2026

On Women’s Equality Day, we honor the women who organized, resisted, and fought to expand freedom, equality, and opportunity, while recognizing that their work remains unfinished. The movement began with generations of women fighting for the right to vote and a voice in shaping our democracy. In the 1960s and 1970s, the second wave of feminism broadened that fight, bringing greater attention to workplace discrimination, reproductive rights, domestic and sexual violence, and other inequities affecting women’s lives.

At Emerge, we believe safety is essential to equality and liberation. Women cannot fully participate in their families, workplaces, communities, or civic life when violence, coercion, and discrimination limit their freedom and choices. Our work to address, prevent, and end domestic abuse is part of the boarder work to challenge systems and conditions that allow sexism, racism, ableism, transphobia, economic injustice, and other forms of oppression to persist.

As our country marks 250 years, Women’s Equality Day invites us to honor how far we have come while taking collective responsibility for how far we still have to go. We can learn from our history, talk openly about the inequities women continue to experience, challenge them when we encounter them, and work together to create safer, more equitable communities.

May we continue expanding the promise of equality so ALL women have the freedom, safety, access, and opportunity to live in their full humanity and thrive. Equality is not complete without safety, and liberation is not possible until everyone is free from violence.
