Sweet, compact, and suitable for the desert! 🍉One of the types of watermelons growing at Mission Garden this season is the Sugar Baby, a variety introduced in the United States in the 1950s that has become a favorite for hot climates like the Sonoran Desert. Its exceptional heat tolerance and early maturity make it well suited to Tucson's growing conditions, producing delicious melons before the summer heat takes a toll on the plants.
At Mission Garden, we grow crops that demonstrate both the rich agricultural history of our region and the ongoing evolution of desert-adapted farming. The Sugar Baby watermelon is a perfect example of how thoughtful plant breeding has created varieties that thrive in arid environments while providing abundant, flavorful harvests.
Come see what's growing and discover how the Sonoran Desert continues to inspire resilient, productive agriculture!
🍉 Mission Garden is open Wednesday–Sunday, 8 a.m.–Noon (summer hours). Admission is always free.
