Did you know that since 2024, the edible food donations from our demo gardens have increased from 400 to more than 4000 pounds a year? Crazy right? This increase is attributed to intercropping, succession planting, regular harvesting, pest control, and cultivating a culture of giving.

Our fresh produce is donated to nonprofits that help people in our community who are food insecure.

Our edible gardens are two of 12 unique demonstration gardens that are open to the public. You are free to wander at your leisure to see what we have going on and get ideas for your patch or patio. With the summer heat coming, we'd recommend coming early, wearing a hat, sunscreen and bring water!
We will pick back up on our Master Gardener led tours in September after our summer break!

What is your Favorite Plant?
Nancy in our Xeriscape garden sent this video of butterflies fluttering around her favorite - Gregg's Mist Flower!

"Best part of the day is taking a break from working in the garden while watching butterflies dance around sipping nectar in the sunshine. The Xeriscape Garden at the Pima County Cooperative Extension feels a little bit magical."

Did you know that you can wander through our Demonstration Gardens at your own pace? During the summer months we don't offer guided tours, but that shouldn't stop you!
Check out our website to see a map of our gardens - https://extension.arizona.edu/programs/pima-county-master-gardeners/tours

Be sure to take some time to visit our Demonstration Gardens to see what magic you can see. Come early, bring a hat, water and sunscreen!

In the arid Southwest, rainfall is scarce and evapotranspiration rates are high. Only natives and some desert-adapted plants can live on 10 or 11 inches of annual rainfall. Other plants require some supplemental irrigation and harvesting rainwater can reduce the use of drinking water for landscape irrigation.
These publications discuss the water requirements for some plants and the way to collect rainwater. Topics include: - Water Harvesting System Components - Simple Water Harvesting System Design and Construction - Complex Water Harvesting Systems

Yes, June is hot. But turn your focus in amazement now to our native flora. The Sonoran desert is the home to one of the most biodiverse deserts in the world and we gardeners have a front row seat. This month our non-native plants will need your attention to keep them happy.

Make sure to practice self-care as we unfortunately cannot cope as well as our native plants. But remember that without the intense heat of June, there would be no monsoon season and no Sonoran desert.

There are so many questions about the best way to water your plants!
Questions like - How should I water? How much should I water? How often should I water? How much water do trees and shrubs really need? How often should they be watered? Where should it be applied?

Most people over water plants. Over-watering can damage or even kill plants, leaving you with high water bills. Learning to water efficiently and effectively is easy.
