🌿 A few weeks ago, Chair Allen and District 3 staff toured the San Xavier Coop Farm. From the moment we stepped onto the farm, we felt the vibrancy and peace of the place. It truly feels special to be surrounded by rolling green acres and stands of fruit trees.
The farm is located in the San Xavier District of the Tohono O’odham Nation, in the ancestral village of Wa:k. Its story goes back to 1887, when tribal land was split into family allotments. In 1971, a group of Allottees in San Xavier came together to form a cooperative of landowners to piece some of the land back together and find a way to farm it as a whole.
Over the years, the farm secured its water rights amid competing regional demands. Today, it operates as a nonprofit governed by the Allottees.
Stepping onto the land today is to experience the results of a farm dedicated to healthy farming practices and the cultivation of traditional crops that support cultural and environmental values, along with economic development within the community.
Duran Andrews has served as farm manager for six years. He carries his iPad, explaining how the farm incorporates smart technology for data‑driven decisions while traditional values remain central, ensuring that the Tohono O’odham Himdag, or Way of Life, guides the farm’s practices and programs.
The farm sponsors various initiatives, such as the wild harvest program, which teaches harvesting, preserving, and cooking traditional wild Sonoran Desert foods. They also sell hay and feed, run a shop with food, books, and crafts, and even offer catering services 🍃.
