Good food shouldn't be out of reach—so we made sure it isn't.

Your Healthy Home Market (YHHM) is a monthly event that gives Compass tenants access to healthy produce, grains, protein, and herbs—all for free. As part of each market, we offer nutrition classes that teach you how to plan a healthier diet, shop and stretch your food budget, and store and cook fresh produce.

It's one of the optional programs available free of charge as a benefit of living in CAH housing, designed to help tenants gain strength and independence.

Last year, that access added up to something remarkable: 18.5 tons of fresh produce—more than 36,000 pounds—reaching 660 people.

This is what growing health and wellness really looks like: steady access to the food and knowledge that help people live well.

Shared Living at Compass isn't a shelter. Here's what it actually is.

Transitional Housing through Compass Communities is a stable home you share with a few others—with a space of your own, and the support to build on it. Here's how it works: you move into a real home, with shared spaces to cook, rest, and connect. A case manager in your corner. Financial coaching and employment support to help you take the next step. And enough time to actually find your footing—agreements that can renew for up to three years.

Because stability doesn't happen overnight. It takes a steady place to stand and room to grow—and that's exactly what Shared Living is built to be: the first step in the Compass ecosystem, a foundation to grow from, toward a place that's fully your own.

Everyone deserves a safe place to live. But a home is also the start of something bigger. At Compass, a stable place to live is the starting point, not the finish line. It's the center of what we call the Human Development Ecosystem: the network of support we build around that home to turn stability into real, lasting growth.

Here's how it works. Once someone has a stable place to live, energy that once went to simply getting by becomes available for everything else—and that's where our ecosystem comes in. We connect residents to career coaching and money management that build toward steady employment. To medical care, mental health support, and nutrition that make wellness possible. To mentorship, community events, and the arts that rebuild the relationships hardship so often strips away. Each piece strengthens the others—and a stable home is what lets them take root.

That's the heart of it: a home is where human development begins, and Compass is there for every step that follows. From that footing, people build skills, health, confidence, and connection—and move steadily toward independence.

This is what we mean by opportunity: not a single open door, but a whole ecosystem of them. And it all starts with a safe place to stand.

Not judged.
Not defined by her past.
Just supported, seen, and given the opportunity to begin again.

In this powerful episode of the Compass Ecosystem Podcast, Emelia Hokaasari of The Haven Tucson shares how recovery, community, and compassionate support help women rebuild stability, rediscover hope, and move toward long-term wellness.

Because healing isn’t just personal.
It changes families, futures, and entire communities.

Emergency shelter resolves the acute crisis, not the structural one. It should be the start of the journey, not the end of it—yet it is often mistaken for the solution. A short stay can’t rebuild the steady income, workable budget, or rental history that a lease demands, so people frequently return to instability—a holding pattern researchers call shelter recidivism.

Shared Living at Compass Communities fills the gap between crisis and permanence. Unlike an emergency shelter or a halfway house, it gives several residents a stable home to share at an affordable rent, with support built in. Its length is intentional: research consistently shows that longer, more supported stays produce better outcomes, because employment, recovery, and savings all take time to hold (Semborski et al., 2021; Dashora & Kiaras, 2025).

This is why Shared Living runs up to three years—long enough to move from crisis to stability, and eventually into permanent housing. That progression, from instability to support to self-sufficiency, is built into the model.

At Compass Affordable Housing, we believe that the path to independence looks different for everyone—and that dignity, stability, and community are the conditions under which people are truly able to grow. The right support at the right moment can change everything.

That’s the philosophy behind the Compass housing ecosystem. Every level of the housing journey matters, and every person deserves support that meets them where they are—whether they’re emerging from crisis, building toward independence, or working toward a permanent home of their own.

Transitional Housing is one of the most critical points on that journey. It’s a structured, shared-living program designed for people who are employed or have income and are ready to take the next step beyond crisis—but who need time, stability, and support to get there. Participants sign a 6-month renewable agreement (up to 3 years) and receive individualized case management tailored to their specific goals and circumstances.

The program operates across four levels—Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum—each designed to meet participants at their current needs and move them progressively toward greater independence. From high-needs support at the Bronze level all the way to preparation for market-rate housing at Platinum, the structure is intentional: no one is rushed, and no one is left without a path forward.

Most people leaving emergency shelters don’t have a clear path to stable housing—in fact, only about 12% receive any housing assistance when they exit. That’s the gap Compass Transitional Housing was built to fill.

Our shared-living model gives participants the time, structure, and support to move from crisis toward independence—at their own pace, with real resources behind them. From individualized case management to a clear progression toward permanent housing, every part of the program is designed with one goal: lasting stability.
