We were greeted back to school today with a little extra joy! Teachers and students noticed and loved this new touch of beauty at our northeast entrance.

A HUGE thank you to all our families who volunteered yesterday to put in the planters and plants alongside our new fence. Another huge thank you to the Peter Howell Neighborhood Association for their generous donation to provide the materials.

To head off into Fall Break, we wrapped up Red Ribbon Week with a schoolwide walk-in led by our leaders in Student Council! Our entire community walked into the building after setting the intention to be a hero.

Our 5th grade students are presented with opportunities each year to be student leaders on campus. One of the roles they may select is being a part of our Patriot Team. This team is responsible for raising & lowering the flag each day. Since there is a precise way to fold the flag and ways to demonstrate respect, Mrs. Lee asked for help from Charlie Thomke from their
BPO Elks Tucson East Lodge #2532, of which they are both members.

Charlie, a Navy veteran who served 10 years, explained why the flag is important to him. As a past exalted ruler within his organization, he stated that often people thank him for his service, and one of the best ways to say "Thank You" is to show the flag and your fellow citizens respect.

He and Mrs. Lee demonstrated how to unfold and raise the flag, and how to lower and fold the flag. Students learned what the folds represent and saw what their own responsibilities would be in action! Thank you Mrs. Lee and Charlie Thomke! 🇺🇲

Red Ribbon Week continues! Remember, tomorrow is our school wide walk-in reminding us to walk away from bad choices. Thanks to Student Council for their hard work in building this display to remind how to be a superhero everyday.

TUSD is proud to host engagements opportunities for families in October! As part of the language arts curriculum adoption process, we will be hosting parent focus groups to gather input and learn about their hopes and priorities for our new curriculum adoption. Please see the attached fliers to fill out a form to join in and have your voice heard!

It's Red Ribbon Week here at Peter Howell! We had a regular Monday Morning Assembly and today, Grades 3-5 had an assembly today about the origination story of Red Ribbon Week and how they can carry on the legacy.

At our Monday Morning Assembly, we recognized our new Ben's Bells Kindness recipients, both were named as great friends and as always supporting others. Our Playground Prodigies were the Kindergarten classes and our Legendary Lunchers were the 2nd grade classes. Mrs. Byrd's 1st grade class were our Glowing Gardeners and Ms. Wadill's 2nd grade class were our Library Leaders. Thank you to all Hawks, teachers and students that showed us how to Soar with Four last week. Finally, we recognized our Hawks of the Month. These students were nominated for being role models during the month of September and elevating their class learning. Way to go, Hawks!

At today's Red Ribbon Assembly, students learned about Kiki Camarena and how he acted as a superhero in his communities to keep everyone safe. They earned prizes for naming their own superheroes and identifying superpowers they all possess that will help them and their communities stay safe and healthy. Finally, they took a pledge to grow healthily and drug-free to reach their lifetime goals and be their own superhero!

What do you miss when you're not at school? Everything! 😩 The answer is everything. Like being welcomed back by Student Council, Monday Morning Assembly recognitions, meeting the Kindness Squad, and Lucy the Chicken's 4th Birthday party in the courtyard! 🎁🎈🎵🐔

As usual at assembly, we celebrated our newest Ben's Bells recipients who will pay it forward next week. We also celebrated our weekly Soar with Four winners: Legendary Lunchers (Mrs. Jolly's and Ms. Hunter's kindergarten classes), Playground Prodigies (Mrs. Byrd's and Ms. Martin's first grade classes), and our Library Leaders and Glowing Gardeners (Ms. Patterson's and Mrs. Jolly's classes). Lastly, at assembly, we were introduced to this year's Kindness Squad.

We ended our day celebrating Lucy's 4th Birthday together by singing her happy birthday and dancing the chicken dance in the courtyard! It's always such fun! We even made her a special sign! Happy birthday, Lucy!

Ms. Kurz (our social media facilitator) was out sick Monday. Can you tell she's sad?! Come to school, Hawks! You never know what you might miss... When you miss school, you miss out. 🥲
