We had the honor of celebrating the D.A.R.E. graduations for Apache Elementary, Animas Elementary, and Dugan Tarango Middle School! We are incredibly proud of these students for their hard work, commitment, and growth over the past 10 weeks.

During the 43-day lapse in appropriations, our social media feeds may have been quiet, but DRRO never stopped working. WE MET WITH OVER 16,000 students alone in OCTOBER! Red Ribbon MONTH WAS A SUCCESS! We supported missions throughout the entire state of New Mexico . PREVENTION NEVER ENDS.

October is National Substance Use Prevention Month — a time to recognize the importance of prevention efforts and the impact they have on our communities.
The New Mexico Army National Guard Drug Demand Reduction Outreach team is proud to be out in the community every day, working with students, families, and organizations to promote healthy choices and drug-free lifestyles.
Today, we spent time at Desert Hills Elementary, teaching students kinder through third how to safely handle situations involving medicine, how to tell the difference between medicine and harmful substances, and why it’s important to always talk to a trusted adult. We spent time with the fourth and fifth graders talking about the dangers and effects of va**ng.
Through education and engagement, we’re helping build a safer, stronger New Mexico—starting with our youth. 💪

DDRO, New Mexico on 13 August 2025 participated in a specialized two-day training workshop hosted by Wanda Hudson of the University of Oklahoma, College of Continuing Education/Outreach, where she serves as the Product Development & Distance Learning Coordinator for the South Southwest PTTC and Southwest Prevention Center (SWPC).

This workshop enhanced our understanding of the ever-evolving world of prevention and provided us with strategies, tools, and perspectives to strengthen the work we do across our communities. One of the main objectives was preparation for an upcoming certification exam. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue growing our knowledge and skills, ensuring that we can better serve and support the people of New Mexico.

Meet SSgt Matteo Dante Ruiz — a civil operator with the New Mexico Counterdrug Joint Task Force (NMCDJTF) Drug Demand Reduction Outreach (DDRO) North Team and a structural craftsman with the 210th RED HORSE Squadron, Matteo brings energy, skill, and heart to everything he does.

Born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Matteo graduated from Hope Christian School in 2020 and answered the call to serve later that year, enlisting in the New Mexico Air National Guard in November 2020. In August 2021, he left for Basic Military Training at Lackland AFB, graduating in October 2021. He immediately began Tech School at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, Mississippi, training as a Structural Engineer (3E3X1) with the 366th Training Squadron Detachment 6, graduating on March 24, 2022.
His dedication and leadership quickly earned him promotions, advancing to Senior Airman on September 28, 2023, and Staff Sergeant on January 7, 2025. In July 2024, Matteo was personally recommended to join the NMCDJTF Counterdrug Task Force, where he now serves full-time as the Staffing and Personnel NCO, actively engaging with youth and the community to inspire positive change.

Outside of uniform, his passions include working out, baseball, music, art, and spending time with family and friends. Whether building mission-critical structures or building up the next generation, Matteo brings the same drive and passion to every challenge.

DDRO Region North participated in National Night Out, bringing our In Plain Sight trailer to support Rio Communities at an incredible event filled with local fire and community partners.

This hands-on experience helps parents and community members spot warning signs of substance use, one more way we’re building stronger, safer neighborhoods together.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and to our amazing partners for making this event such a success!

From Monday, April 14th to Thursday, April 17th, 2025 the Army National Guard Joint Counterdrug Taskforce - DDRO - Region South conducted Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Graduation Ceremonies. D.A.R.E. has been revamped and has changed its focus to “decision-making”. We spent 10 weeks with all 5th graders in each school where they learned communication and non-communication skills, risks and consequences, dealing with stress, peer pressure and helping others. We celebrated with the students, parents and school on their achievement. Thank you to Gadsden Independent School District, Santa Teresa Elementary, Desert View Elementary, Berino Elementary, Las Cruces Catholic School, Sunland Park Police and Fire Department, and New Mexico State Police for their support.
