Family Law CASA of King County

Family Law CASA of King County Advocating for low-income children in custody cases so they have a chance for a safe, secure home life.

Family Law CASA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to providing legal advocacy to children caught in the hardships of high-conflict contested custody cases. The children we serve are dealing with very difficult issues: All come from low-income homes, 60% of the parents are dealing with chemical dependency, 59% involve allegations of domestic violence, 24% of the parents have untreated

mental illness, and in 25% of the cases the child have been subjected to physical or sexual abuse. By providing a fair and objective voice in court, we aim to lessen the conflict in the family, provide a safer, more secure life for the child, and end the generational cycle of drug use, family violence and poverty. Family Law CASA runs ENTIRELY on community support - we receive no government funding.

A 128% increase in trials. A 49% increase in hearings. These numbers raise an important question: Why are more cases reaching trial?

The answer is more complex than it may appear. Delays, limited court capacity, and growing case complexity all shape how cases move through the legal system. When families wait longer for hearings or face fewer opportunities to resolve disputes, more cases can end up at trial.

That shift has real consequences. More hearings and trials require additional time from judges, attorneys, volunteer Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs), and families already navigating difficult circumstances. They also highlight the growing pressure on a family justice system that many parents struggle to access in the first place.
