Yesterday, Detective Mosley and Officer Yaranon responded to a shoplifting incident at a retail store in the mall. A 31-year-old female from Lakewood who had an infant with her was detained. It was determined that she had concealed merchandise in a bag which she then attempted to conceal in her infant’s car seat.

The suspect initially provided a false name to Detective Mosley before finally providing her real name. It was discovered that she had active felony warrants out of Pierce County for Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle and Eluding as well as a theft warrant and was no stranger to law enforcement. When questioned as to how she had gotten to the mall, she became nervous and elusive. Officers were able to backtrack her on surveillance cameras and determined that she had arrived in a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The VIN had been intentionally obscured and the only plate on the vehicle was for a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the same color. It was determined that the vehicle had been stolen in Seattle and since had been used in various crimes. The vehicle was recovered and impounded.

The suspect was booked into jail for theft and providing false statements as well as for the felony warrants.

Officers took custody of the infant and awaited the arrival of family members at the PD mall substation. Officer Yaranon noticed that the infant’s diaper hadn’t been changed in some time and went out and purchased diapers, cream and wipes then kept the infant happy until the family members arrived to take him.

Last night, Officer Nunez spotting a black Jeep Grand Cherokee driving extremely recklessly in the vicnity of S 146th St and 42nd Ave S. When Officer Nunez attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled eastbound on S 146th St at a high rate of speed. Residents reported the vehicle almost crashing into a parked car and coming close to losing control near a cul-de-sac before turning around and fleeing back westbound.

Officer Nunez was able to successfully deploy a tire deflation device as the vehicle passed him. Officers then tracked the vehicle west to where it was discovered unoccupied in the area of 16th Ave S and S 146th St. A perimeter was setup and witnesses reported two males fleeing on foot from the vehicle. Officers located a male matching the description of one of the occupants that had just been out for a late-night jog through some sticker bushes according to his version of events. He was identified and the vehicle was impounded for evidence.

On Saturday (8/15), officers responded to a report of a fight between two adult males in a public area of the 14200 blk 37th Ave S. Arriving officers located and detained both involved parties. Witnessed positively identified both suspects and a knife was recovered at the scene. No injuries were reported.

Both suspects refused to state what had happened or otherwise cooperate with the investigation. Both were booked into jail for active warrants along with new charges of disorderly conduct related to the fight.

👀ID ME - Grab & Go🚨

Retail Emphasis Detective Mosley is seeking assistance in identifying the pictured organized retail crime (ORC) offender that entered a department store, grabbed a handful of coats and nonchalantly walked out the door with them.

Also, there was some commentary on our last ID ME post related to why these types of ID ME posts are being posted with excuses being made for this type of behavior. ORC is a major issue in our region and is often associated with stolen motor vehicles, strong-arm robberies, narcotics, fi****ms and other offenses. Many of those committing these offenses are doing so up and down I-5 and even in numerous states. These are individuals that are committing "shoplift for profit" thefts. They are not just trying to put clothes on their back. They are reselling the stolen merchandise online, at swap meets and other places in the region. They are oftentimes very aggressive and or violent towards store employees, recklessly flee in vehicles that are often stolen even if they're not being pursued and have no qualms in resisting arrest and or assaulting officers taking them into custody which just occurred here several days ago. In short, these are usually the start of a string of serious crimes that impact everyone.

We will continue to seek to identify those responsible for ORC in our city and work with our regional partners to combat this growing issue. Washington State currently ranks number one in the nation for organized retail crime which has contributed to losses of close to $3 billion per year in our state alone which translates to approximately $603 million in lost local and state tax revenue. That is lost tax revenue that impacts infrastructure and public services that communities rely on and drives up the cost of goods for retailers and the public.

🚨Is This Yours?🚨

The pictured bracelet was located by a guest at a hotel in Tukwila this past March. It was mistakenly believed to belong to her husband and was taken back to her home in Gresham, Oregon where it was discovered that it was not in fact his bracelet. The bracelet was then turned over to the Gresham Police Department.

In accordance with item retention policies, the Gresham Police Department has requested that we share this photo and attempt to find the rightful owner. If not one claims the bracelet, it will be returned to the individual who found it.

The pictured individual helped himself to merchandise from a specialty store and leisurely walked out the door. Officer Bartlett would love assistance in identifying him so he can press charges for the theft of almost $1200 in merchandise.

🚨Shoplifting Sting Nabs 11🚨

Last week, Special Emphasis Unit (SEU) detectives and our retail theft guru Detective Mosley teamed up with eight retailers for a shoplifting sting. Over the course of several hours, the team made 11 arrests and identified 4 that were organized retail crime (ORC) related. Merchandise was recovered along with tools for removing security tags and sensors.

We also sadly had a missed connection with Angelo during the operation. Angelo decided that it was a nice sunny day and the perfect day to shoplift. He helped himself to a five-finger discount from a department store then got in his car and started to drive away. When detectives attempted to pull Angelo over, he fled in a reckless manner which caused detectives to discontinue their attempts to apprehend him. Unfortunately for Angelo, we know who he is, he’s on video committing the theft and on video performing the stunt driving. Angelo can expect to receive info on his upcoming court date for the shoplifting charge in the mail. Some additional charges were also added as a bonus due to the behavior following the shoplifting incident, but we don’t want to be spoilers so that will remain a surprise.

🚨Retirement of Sergeant Rory Mettlin🚨

July marked the end of another era as Sergeant Rory Mettlin signed off one last time and became a member of the check of the month club. Sergeant Mettlin grew up in Tukwila, played Little League at the old baseball field where Lowe’s now stands and graduated from Foster High School.

Sergeant Mettlin started his law enforcement career with the Tukwila Police Department on 2/9/98 as a patrol officer before being promoted to sergeant in 2011. Throughout his years as a sergeant, he supervised the Patrol units, the Community Police Team and Professional Standards Unit. Beyond Sergeant Mettlin's day-to-day responsibilities, he also served as a D.A.R.E. Instructor for the Tukwila School District.

Sergeant Mettlin was a long-time Civil Disturbance Unit (CDU) member and was known as the go-to guy for all things special munitions. In 2013, he was assigned to lead the CDU as its supervisor. In addition to everything else he did, he also gave his time assisting with oral boards, helping identify and mentor the next generation of officers and truly being a kind ear and friend to so many both in the department and the community.

Sergeant Mettlin was recognized with numerous awards throughout his career, including:
✅Meritorious Service Medal (2005) for his response to a strong-arm robbery involving possible gunshots.
✅Meritorious Service Medal (2011) for his response to the El Matador fire.
✅Teamwork in Action Award (2015), alongside representatives from Fire, Parks & Recreation, Public Works, Human Services, and the Mayor's Office, for the collaborative work of the Hot Spots Committee.
✅Distinguished Service Medal (2018) recognizing 20 years of dedicated service.

Sergeant Mettlin truly took care of his people, took care of the community and taught many of us valuable lessons through his actions and words. In his parting speech, he emphasized to everyone that we are here to serve the community and that the needs of the community should be what drives what we do each and every day.

Thank you Sergeant Mettlin for your 28 years of service, friendship and guidance. You will be missed!

On July 25th, Detective Kim conducted a welfare check request from a 911 caller on a woman with two small children that had been found sleeping inside of their vehicle in the 200 blk Andover Park E. Based on Detective Kim’s conversation with her, it was determined that she was the victim of a recent domestic violence assault. Due to the domestic violence situation, she had her children had nowhere to turn and found themselves living out of her car.

Detective Kim and our Mental Health Professionals Fisk and Smith assisted with getting the family a hotel room for the weekend with the assurance of the Blue Bridge Alliance program. Our MHPs are working on getting the family into more stable housing this week.
