On his birthday, Arlington National Cemetery remembers Major Audie Murphy, one of the most decorated American soldiers during World War II. During the war, Murphy fought in Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany. He earned more than 20 military medals for his service, including the Medal of Honor.

In July 1945, Murphy’s face graced the cover of Life magazine with the headline, “Most Decorated Soldier.” His story captured the public’s imagination. He had grown up as the seventh of twelve children on a sharecropper’s farm Texas and enlisted in the U.S. Army as an infantryman after being rejected by the paratroopers and the Marine Corps.

Murphy published his best-selling memoir To Hell and Back in 1949. He then became an actor and even starred as himself in the film version of his memoir. His fame, military record, and youthful appearance made him the personification of the World War II generation.

Murphy died in a plane crash on May 31, 1971, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Section 46. His grave remains one of the most visited graves in the cemetery.
