Well there has been a change. Because of very confusing election laws Jose, Patrick and myself will now appear on the Nov. 5th ballot, even though no one is running against us we still have to be on the ballot.

08/13/2024

Well it's almost official, all three of us running for re- election ran unopposed so that means we will not be on the ballot but appointed by council for another four year term. I would like to thank all of those that signed my nomination papers and everyone that encouraged me to run again. I'm here for you and your needs as a citizen of Tulare. Thank you again.

If anyone is interested I am running for re-election to the City Council. All the paperwork was turned in on the 24th but for some reason the registrar of voters web side does not list me as a candidate. Printed paperwork from the site also list me as 124 years old. I know they say that political office can take a toll on you but really aging 51 years in three and a half years, I hate to think what next years birthday cake will look like. We as a city council have accomplished a great deal since I joined the council, I would like to see these projects completed and I have additional projects that will benefit the people of Tulare. But first things first, a quick trip to Visalia Monday morning to make sure I'm on the ballot and to take me back to 77 not 124. At 124. I know that Chief Ott, will not let me climb the 107 ft aerial ladder like I have every aerial the Fire Dept. has had at 124 years old.

We had the special city council meeting last night to try to save the Ham building from the wrecking ball. We had around 30 people in attendance that supported saving the last historical building built by Israel Hays Ham around 1879. I want to Thank Mr. Edwin Smith who alerted me to the decision by the owner to demolish the historic building. I would also like to thank Assembly candidate Xavier Avila for his support for saving the building, members of the Cemeterians, the Historic preservation committee, business people and private citizens. The support of the council, Planning Director Mario Anaya, City Manager Mondell shows just how important saving this historic building is. In 1996 the Tulare Improvement and redevelopment agency tried to demolish the building and build a what? PARKING LOT. the community came together to stop the action and the building was saved. What other one of a kind buildings have been demolished to build a parking lot and small bank? The Tulare Theater, the still standing theaters in Visalia, Hanford, Fresno, Bakersfield as well as others couldn't compare to the architecture of our theater. Does anyone remember setting downstairs and staring up at the enormous head sculpture over the stage and swearing that as you moved the eyes followed you? I do. Let's not make the same mistakes of the past and allow our history to be destroyed.

Last Thursday morning I received a phone call from a concerned citizen that happened to be in the vicinity of the Advance Building. He saw several people that appeared to be taking measurements of the building. He said he ask if they were going to remodel ? they said no the out of town owner said it's to costly to bring it up to code so they want to demolish it. The citizen said he didn't want to see it demolished and there were others that felt the same way. I told him I had not heard anything about demolition, I had heard that several offers were made to buy the building and all were turned down. Earlier this year I introduced and agenda item to create a historical preservation committee to save our historical downtown. The committee has been functioning for several months working on identifying all of these buildings. After the phone call I called our City Manager and alerted him to the information, he knew nothing about the demolition but said he would check. Around 6:30 P.M. Thursday night I got word that the planning Dept. had issued a demolition permit back in April the permit was paid for but not picked up. I wanted to know why inlight of council's efforts to save what's left of our historic buildings we were not notified. My understanding is this is the last building constructed by Israel Ham around 1879 that still stands in Tulare. After numerous phone calls and emails to find a way to stop the demolition that could happen any time, I called Council Sigala who fully supports the saving of our downtown and asked for his support in calling for an emergency/special meeting Monday he agreed without hesitation. I then called the Mayor and explained the situation and she directed staff to notice a special meeting for Monday June 24th at 5 P.M. in the council chambers. If you would like to see this historic part of Tulare saved from the wrecking ball please come and share your thoughts Monday night.

I received a concern from a resident of California Ranchos about old furniture being dumped at the end of the street outside the gated community. The city Street's Dept. and Code Enforcement makes effort to get this illegal dumping cleaned up. It appears that now with the warmer weather we are seeing an increase in illegal dumping all over town. The city will take care of dumping on city property and streets maintained by the city. Private property and private streets are the responsibility of the property owner. If you see someone dumping please call the Tulare Police Dep. and provide the location, and a description of the people or vehicle doing the dumping. If you see illegal dumping within the city limits please call either Public Works or Code Enforcement. The priority for the city is to get it cleaned up as quickly as possible, it can be determined later if it's a city responsibility or a private property owner . Unfortunately, FaceBook continues to give me problems, so if you need to contact me for assistance, questions or any matters concerning the city please contact me at home 559-688-6348

Unfortunately the street work that was to be completed by June of this year for the Academy, Dayton, area has been delayed. I don't have a new timeline but I continue to stress the deplorable condition of all the streets in this area and they need to be taken care of as soon as possible. Once I have dates I'll let everyone know.

This is Sadie, she's a rescue from the Tulare Animal Services. On Oct. 21 Barbara and I attended the Barks and Brews event at the outlet mall. I was so pleased to see the effort made by Animal Services and The Friends of The Tulare Animal Services to get dogs from our shelter adopted. What really caught my eye was an organization that had twice as many dogs as Tulare did all for adoption. As I talked to the people from the group they said they were from a city in a county South of us and the reason they were there was because their shelter was so overcrowded "they were killing dogs on a daily basis just like a city North of Tulare." They commented how they wished they could be like Tulare finding alternatives to the killing and the emotional stress it put on staff. Then they showed me a young huskie that the owner had the vocal cords cut so he couldn't bark. Our shelter was built to house 80 dogs as of last week we were upwards of 175. Through the tireless efforts of the Friends of the Shelter and our staff we have been able to relocate and adopt out dogs and have not killed a single animal because of overcrowding. We will continue this effort but we need your help. With Veterans Day approaching most are not aware that per state law adoption fees are waived for veterans adopting an animal. I look at the picture of Sadie and think what if we hadn't adopted her. I think of the poem "The Rainbow Bridge." Please help these animals that are in a situation not of their making.
