Law Enforcement Incident South of Happy, Texas

At approximately 9:00 a.m., members of the Randall County Sheriff’s Office S.P.E.A.R. Unit contacted the Swisher County Sheriff’s Office and advised that they were conducting surveillance on an individual with multiple active felony arrest warrants.

At approximately 1:00 p.m., it was determined that the wanted individual was inside a residence located just south of Happy, Texas. Swisher County officials were advised that the Randall County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team was enroute to assist. Simultaneously, the Amarillo Police Department SWAT Team was also dispatched to the scene.

During the incident, law enforcement maintained communication with the individual and members of his family. As the situation progressed, Amarillo Police Department SWAT operators deployed multiple tactics to bring the encounter to a peaceful resolution.

Upon entry into the residence, SWAT operators observed the individual in medical distress. It is believed the individual ingested an unknown substance. Emergency medical and life-saving measures were immediately initiated; however, the individual later succumbed to his medical condition.

Swisher County Justice of the Peace was notified, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause and manner of death.

At no point during this incident was there an active threat to the public.

This remains an ongoing investigation.
