If you've got train tracks going through your town, you might be interested in this article.

Vinyl chloride, the chemical found in 5 of the derailed cars, is highly volatile and is used in making PVC (a type of plastic). "Train derailments are not uncommon. More than 250 trains have derailed in the last decade, according to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, a branch of the federal Department of Transportation. Of them, roughly half involved hazardous waste. Trains that carry hazardous waste face additional federal regulations, but the Norfolk Southern train that derailed in East Palestine was not considered a “high-hazard flammable train,” federal officials told The Lever, an investigative news outlet. Despite the combustibility of vinyl chloride, industry lobbyists have successfully limited many trains carrying the chemical from the most stringent federal regulations."

As the petrochemical industry grows, the disaster is a reminder of the health and safety risks that accompany reliance on fossil fuels.

Drink tea using tea bags? You might want to start using loose tea. Really sad that we have to find this information out from a study done at McGill University. Unfortunately, here in the US, chemicals can be added to products without any major regulations (unlike drugs which are highly regulated). It's up to us to spread the word that these chemicals are bad for our health and bad for the environment.

"We were shocked to see the high number of plastic particles released into the beverage," a co-author of the study told Newsweek.
