🚨 Low Head Dams: The Drowning Machine 🚨
Over the past several days, people have shared multiple messages about the dangers of low head dams. Understanding the hydraulics, recognizing the boil line, and identifying the recirculating current below these structures can save lives.
Low head dams may appear harmless, but they create powerful hydraulic currents capable of trapping even the strongest swimmers, boaters, and rescuers. Once caught in the recirculation, escape can be extremely difficult.
We have also seen videos and photos of firefighters operating in and around floodwaters while wearing bunker gear. This is an extremely dangerous practice that must stop. We don’t wear a dry suit and life jacket into a house fire, and we shouldn’t wear bunker gear into the water. Water rescue requires water rescue equipment.
✅ Wear a properly fitted PFD anytime you are working around water.✅ If you are close enough to slip, fall, or slide into the water, you should have a PFD on. Ground support should be in PFD”s ✅ Wear the proper PPE for the environment and mission.✅ Understand the hazards before committing personnel.
With flooding impacting many areas, now is the time to pay attention, seek quality training, practice skills often and ensure your team is prepared. Good decisions made early prevent tragedies later.
Stay vigilant. Stay trained. Stay safe. Stay physically fit. PS: flood water can be contaminated, wet suits trap contaminated water against your skin and heat it!
