I’m voting NO on SQ 846 and SQ 844 on Aug. 25th and here’s why:
SQ 846: Oklahoma already requires proof of identity to vote. We have one of the most secure elections in the country.
SQ 846 was written by powerful politicians at the state capitol who arrogantly assume Oklahomans will vote to give them even more power to decide what qualifies as proof of identity and enshrine it in our constitution.
Once it’s in the constitution, no future legislature can change it. The only way it can be changed is by gathering 175,000+ valid voter signatures to send it back to the ballot for repeal.
This is unnecessary and dangerous.
Dangerous because the same legislature has spent the past 4 years gutting the citizen led ballot initiative process. Everyday people’s right to petition their government and make changes at the grassroots level has been dismantled by controlling politicians who despise the thought of ordinary people passing their ideas into laws.
Again, the same politicians who authored SQ 846 assume voters will gladly hand over even more power despite years of contempt and disrespect they’ve shown to everyday Oklahomans.
If they really wanted to add a new form of identity to vote (in addition to drivers license, voter id card, passport, tribal id, state id) they could easily pass it as a state law. No need for a constitutional amendment.
As for SQ 844, I’m voting NO because there are ZERO guidelines or details on how reimbursements will change. If it passes, powerful politicians could eliminate reimbursements to schools / local services or pick and choose which counties to reimburse.
Join me in voting NO on both state questions 846 and 844 on Aug. 25
