There will be a prescribed ecological burn on Tumwater’s west side around 93rd Avenue today, August 31, beginning around 11 a.m.

This burn is conducted by the Ecostudies Institute and Center for Natural Lands Management with support from Tumwater Fire. The burns are intentional and controlled and there will be trained firefighting staff on scene during the burn.

Prescribed burns are a tool used for habitat restoration and wildfire risk reduction. Permits are issued with consideration for the ecological need, the specific site, and weather conditions.

Drifting smoke near this site may distract drivers or slow traffic.

UPDATE: Staff from the Center for Natural Lands Management have advised that the prescribed burn scheduled for today on 93rd Ave has been cancelled. The burns are tentatively scheduled based on weather forecasts. In today's case, they weren't comfortable that they were going to have the necessary wind from the east.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign on the first Tuesday in August that promotes connections between police, fire, and other first responders and neighborhoods to make communities safer, more caring places to live. Police and Fire Departments and Councilmembers Eileen Swarthout and Kelly Von Holtz got in on the action tonight and it was a fun time with the neighborhood kids. Thank you to all the neighborhoods around Tumwater that took part.

Wondering what to do if you are traveling a roundabout and see an emergency vehicle? Here are some tips from Tumwater Deputy Fire Chief Shawn Crimmins:

🚨 Do not stop in the inner median.
🚨 Continue moving through the roundabout.
🚨 Exit right at the very next available opportunity.
🚨 Pull over to the right side of the road only after you have safely cleared the roundabout.
🚨 Do not enter the roundabout if you see or hear an emergency vehicle coming.

The burns are intentional and controlled and there will be trained firefighting staff on scene during the burn. Prescribed burns are a tool used for forest restoration and wildfire risk reduction. Today, we stand with our brothers and sisters in fire service as we mourn the loss of our fellow firefighter. Tumwater Fire expresses our deepest sympathies to Jake's family, our partners in Lacey, and everyone impacted by this loss.

With heavy hearts, Lacey Fire District 3 mourns the loss of Firefighter Jake Johnson.
 
Jake was a firefighter, a teammate, and a friend who answered the call to serve others with courage and compassion. His loss is felt deeply by everyone who knew him and served alongside him.
 
Over the past several days, we have witnessed an extraordinary outpouring of love and support from our community and from people far beyond it. The prayers, messages of hope, and countless acts of kindness shared on Jake’s behalf have been a powerful reminder of the impact he had on those around him and the strength of the fire service family and the communities we serve.
 
We extend our deepest gratitude to the responding crews from Olympia and Tumwater Fire Departments, and the teams at Providence St. Peter Hospital and Harborview Medical Center who cared for Jake throughout this journey. These dedicated professionals provided extraordinary skill, compassion, and unwavering commitment. The care and kindness they showed Jake and his family will never be forgotten.

At 2121 Tumwater Fire Crews, along with Olympia Fire, McLane/Black Lake, and East Olympia were dispatched to a structure fire on North 4th Ave SW. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and fire conditions. Crews were able to get the fire under control within 20 minutes. No injuries to civilians or firefighters. Our Tumwater Fire investigators are on scene. Thanks again to our mutual aid partners for their quick response.
