We mourn the loss of two Louisiana Fire Fighters in Line of Duty Death's this week.

Chief Robert Roe of Bossier Parish Fire District 1 died after his battle cancer.

FF's are more prone than the general population to get cancer due to the carcinogens we are exposed to during and after fire fighting operations. FF's are at greater risk of Testicular cancer: About 100% to 102% higher risk (double the risk) Multiple myeloma: Roughly 53% higher risk Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma: About 51% higher risk Skin/Melanoma: 31% to 39% higher risk Prostate cancer: 28% higher risk Brain cancer: 31% higher risk.

Two of our very own are now in a battle with cancer.

FF Robert Hughes of the Meaux-Nunez Volunteer Fire Department in Vermillion Parish died a Line of Duty Death yesterday due to a motor vehicle crash while en-route to an emergency.

Up to 16% of Fire Fighter Line of Duty Deaths in the US are attributable to Motor Vehicle Crash's. Please yield to all emergency vehicles that are en-route to an emergency.

Keep the families and the Fire Department families in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with these tragedies'. Also pray for healing of those that are in need.

With all the heat and lack of rain our area is no in what the National Weather Service is calling a "FLASH DROUGHT". We are NOT currently in a burn ban, but it is advised that no outdoor open fires be lit at this time. This advisory does not include fires in bbq pits, or fire rings. If you do light I fire DO NOT leave it unattended, and remember you can be held civilly liable should a fire you start damage another persons property. Please don't be that person!

Louisiana’s Expanded Move Over Law is NOW in Effect

DIFFERENT LIGHTS. SAME RESPONSIBILITY.

The light may be blue. It may be amber. It may simply be a stranded motorist’s flashing hazard lights. Whatever the color, give them room.

Louisiana’s expanded Move Over Law NOW includes disabled, immobilized, or nonoperational vehicles displaying hazard lights, flashing lights, or another emergency warning device.

When approaching:

• On a highway with two or more lanes traveling in the same direction, safely move into a lane away from the roadside vehicle.

• If changing lanes is unsafe or impossible, or you are traveling on a two-lane highway, slow to a reasonably safe speed and maintain a safe speed for road conditions.

The law continues to require drivers to yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles using their audible or visual warning signals, unless otherwise directed by a police officer.

Whether it is a first responder, roadside worker, or stranded motorist, everyone deserves space to remain safe.

Move over. Slow down. Give them room.
