Not every “e-bike” is actually an e-bike.

That matters, because we are seeing more electric motorcycles being ridden illegally on Turlock roadways, especially now that school is out.

A quick parent check:

If it has pedals, speed limits, and operates like a bicycle, it may fall under e-bike rules.

If it has no pedals, looks/operates like a dirt bike or motorcycle, reaches higher speeds, or is not registered for street use, it likely does not belong on public roadways.

These vehicles may look fun, but when they are being ridden through traffic, against traffic, around cars, past pedestrians, or through stop signs, they become a serious safety issue.

Yesterday, officers were involved in two separate pursuits involving these bikes. In one case, the rider was arrested for felony evading, booked into jail, and the bike was towed.

We will continue educating riders and parents, but enforcement is happening too.

Riders may be cited.
Bikes may be towed.
If you run from police, you can go to jail.

Parents: please know what your child is riding, where they are riding it, and whether it is actually legal for the road.

The goal is not to ruin anyone’s summer. The goal is to keep someone from getting seriously hurt.

A reckless driver who fled from one of our officers the night before is now in custody thanks to the coordinated efforts of CHP Merced, Merced County Sheriff’s Office, and the Turlock Police Department.

After the vehicle failed to yield and fled at a dangerous speed, our officer authored a felony warrant for the vehicle. The following night, allied agencies located the suspect vehicle, which ultimately crashed after another pursuit in Merced County. The driver was taken into custody without further incident.

We’re grateful for the strong partnership between agencies and the communication that helped bring this situation to a safe conclusion before an innocent person was hurt.

We’re proud to introduce Det. Jimenez, who is stepping into our rotational detective role. With 11 years serving our Turlock community, his track record is impressive—he’s served as a Field Training Officer, worked a previous four-year special assignment in our Special Investigations Unit (SIU), and is an active member of our SWAT Team.

We’re confident he’ll bring that same dedication to this new four-year assignment, and we’re excited to see him thrive in this next chapter! 👏

Parents and guardians: check your kids.

Va**ng and to***co products are not allowed on campus, and more importantly, they can be extremely dangerous to a child’s health. Many of these devices contain high levels of ni****ne and other harmful chemicals that can impact developing brains and lead to addiction.

Many va**ng devices today are intentionally designed to look colorful, discreet, and easy to hide. Some even resemble everyday items.

Know what these products look like. Have the conversations. Pay attention to what’s in backpacks, bedrooms, pockets, and chargers.

The Turlock Police Department and TUSD are committed to helping keep our schools and community safe. Parents and guardians play an important role in preventing youth va**ng and to***co use by staying informed and maintaining open communication with their children.

Please join us in welcoming our newest officer, Officer Stea!

Yesterday, Officer Stea was officially sworn in as a member of the Turlock Police Department. After serving six years with the Los Angeles Police Department, he brings valuable experience, knowledge, and perspective to our team.

Choosing where to continue a career in law enforcement is not a small decision, and we’re grateful he chose to continue his service here in Turlock. We’re excited to have him on board and look forward to the impact he’ll make in our community.

Welcome to TPD, Officer Stea. 👏

Big accomplishments deserve to be celebrated. 🎓

Today, Cadets Sharma, Parra, and Strode graduated from California State University, Stanislaus, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

Balancing college while serving as police cadets is no small task, and we are proud of the hard work, commitment, and dedication each of them showed along the way.

Captain Rodrigues was there today to support and celebrate this milestone with them.

Congratulations, Cadet Sharma, Cadet Parra, and Cadet Strode! We are proud of you and excited to see what comes next.

Turlock, California – The Turlock Police Department reminds travelers to always buckle up and secure children in the right car seats when visiting friends and family.

This year’s Click It or Ticket campaign runs from May 18 to 31. During this time, the Turlock Police Department will have additional officers on patrol actively looking for drivers and passengers who are not wearing seat belts. This includes vehicles in which children are not secured in child safety seats or the appropriate safety seats for their age.

“Our priority is protecting the people in our community. Wearing a seat belt or properly securing children in car seats or a booster seat gives everyone a better chance of surviving a crash,” Sergeant Jason Watson said. “We want every trip to end safely, so please buckle up, every time.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2023, 10,484 people killed in crashes in the U.S. were not wearing a seat belt. In California, there were 780 unrestrained people killed in crashes that same year, including 24 children. Additionally, unrestrained child fatalities in California increased by 4.3 percent from 2022 to 2023.

California law requires all children under 2 years old to ride in a rear-facing car seat, unless the child is 40 or more pounds or is 40 or more inches tall. Once a child reaches these milestones, all children under the age of 8 years are still required to be secured in a car seat or booster seat. Children under the age of 8 may not ride in the front seat unless the vehicle is not equipped with a rear, forward-facing seat. Children 8 and older, or who are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall, may be secured by a booster seat, but at a minimum must be wearing a properly fitted safety belt.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to keep children in the proper rear or forward-facing seat as long as possible and use the “Five-Step Test” to determine if their child is big enough to safely use a seat belt without a booster seat.

The Turlock Police Department car seat safety program offers free inspections and help to install your car seat. For more information about the car seat safety program, call the Turlock Police Department Traffic Safety Unit at (209) 668-5550 ext. 6680.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
