MAINE LAWMAKERS RESPOND TO LISBON’S DRINKING WATER SITUATION

AUGUSTA – Do not drink the water.

That is the message from the Lisbon Water Department, which was issued Thursday afternoon when residents in that town reportedly experienced murky water that Department officials attributed to failed water filters.

Sen. Jeff Timberlake, R-Androscoggin, and Rep. Richard Mason, R-Lisbon, have been in touch with town and water department officials since the warning was issued. According to Shellie Reynolds, the Department’s interim general manager, the filters allowed too much sludge that may include toxic levels of arsenic into the drinking water system.

Reynolds said that filters have been replaced and a water quality test sample was sent to New Hampshire. Dr. Puthiery Va, the director for the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), told lawmakers that test results will be available by this afternoon if not sooner.

Arsenic is an odorless and tasteless element present in Maine’s ground water due natural deposits and from agricultural and industrial sources. According to the Maine CDC, exposure to arsenic can result in severe health effects including stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting; thickening and discoloration of the skin; numbness in hands and feet; partial paralysis; and blindness. Prolonged exposure or exposure to large doses can be fatal.

Sen. Timberlake said Friday morning that while an investigation is needed as to how this happened, the immediate health and safety of residents is the first priority. For now, he said Walmart and Poland Spring have sent truckloads of drinking water and residents can stop at the town’s public works department located at 14 Capital Avenue to pick it up on a first come, first served basis.

“As we examine how this happened and what we can do to ensure Lisbon residents have safe, clean drinking water going forward, we must take care of their immediate needs now. Rep. Mason and I have reached out to anyone who can help supply the town with water until we get the test results back,” he said. “Just like what communities experience after a major disaster like a hurricane or flood, it’s great to see people and companies like Walmart and Poland Spring pitch in to help others in times of need.”

Attention Lisbon area residents

Please monitor and follow the recommendations of federal and state law enforcement agencies and the Lisbon Police Department by sheltering in place with an emphasis on residents between Mill Street in Lisbon Center, along the Rt 196 corridor east to Main street in Lisbon Falls. Businesses located within this area especially will mostly be closed until safety concerns have been addressed.

I appreciate all those who are actively engaged in protecting us. Please pray for all those affected and for a speedy end to this tragic situation.

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, Deputy Secretary for BMV Cathie Curtis and Deputy Secretary for Policy Joann Bautista joined the Legislature's Transportation Committee after Governor Janet Mills signed the Highway Fund Budget into law this morning.

The budget, which is the product of strong bipartisan negotiations and collaborations, strengthens the BMV's ability to modernize many of our systems, making them more convenient, accessible and efficient for Mainers and businesses.

Happy Thanksgiving
This week marks our oldest of traditions, dating back to 1621, Thanksgiving.

This is representative Rick Mason of Lisbon with a Thanksgiving message from the Maine House Republicans.

In spite of all that we are experiencing, Mainers and Americans have so much to be thankful for. We are truly lucky to be here in this great state, living in the greatest country on earth.

Now is a time to reflect on gratitude and the importance of being grateful. We are grateful for our families and friends, grateful for our liberty, and grateful for a loving God who makes it all possible.

Thanksgiving is a holiday that unites us all. It is older than our great republic and reminds us that our differences are not so great. In that first Thanksgiving, pilgrims seeking freedom from religious persecution came to a new land and broke bread with the Native Americans that helped them to survive that first winter, giving thanks for life and the human capacity for compassion.

Even during periods of great upheaval, as Americans we have paused to give thanks for all that we have.

In his first year in office (1789), President George Washington declared a “Day of Thanksgiving.” In it, he recognized the need to be thankful for the mercies shown to our young country.

It wasn’t until 1863 that President Abraham Lincoln issued his now famous Thanksgiving Proclamation establishing the last Thursday of November as Thanksgiving. The Proclamation was delivered in the midst of the American civil war. Three months earlier, some 51,000 people died at Gettysburg over a three day period.

In his address, President Lincoln called upon the “Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.”

While our country’s politics may be polarized, we still have so much to be thankful for as Americans.

We can be thankful for family, friends, neighbors and the country we live in. Our gratitude for the many blessing that we share can be extended to others throughout the year.

We would do well to remember what President John F. Kennedy wrote in a Thanksgiving Proclamation issued just days before his death, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.”

This is Representative Rick Mason, thank you for listening. On behalf of all of us, please have a Happy Thanksgiving.
