We are a Pre-K through fifth grade public school that is part of the Woodland Hills School District in Pennsylvania. The Woodland Hills School District was formed in July, 1981, and is located in the eastern portion of Allegheny County, approximately eight miles east of the City of Pittsburgh. The school district covers 13-1/2 square miles and includes the communities of Braddock, Braddock Hills, Chalfant, Churchill, East Pittsburgh, Edgewood, Forest Hills, North Braddock, Rankin, Swissvale, Turtle Creek and Wilkins Township. The school district is part of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. Geographically, Woodland Hills is bounded by the Monongahela River on the south and the City of Pittsburgh to the west. The Penn-Lincoln Parkway passes through the northern portion of the school district and supplies easy access to downtown Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Route 30 is a major east-west traffic artery which passes through the center of the school district. The entire area is served by the Port Authority of Allegheny County, which provides bus transportation to surrounding areas as well as within the school district community. Although composed of 12 municipalities, the school district is a comprehensive community that can provide for a variety of individual needs in housing, employment and social activities. There are over 21,000 residences located within the school district boundaries. The district is primarily a residential community and many residents look to the metropolitan Pittsburgh area for employment, entertainment and social activities. The close proximity of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University also provide residents with access to numerous educational and cultural activities. The district serves approximately 3,500 students yearly, providing them with a wide array of education and extra-curricular opportunities to develop academically, athletically and socially. Woodland Hills is dedicated to excellence in the classroom, with the primary emphasis placed on quality instruction and student achievement. Additionally, the district is committed to developing community support and citizen involvement within the district.

Turtle Creek fifth graders welcomed Mr. Phil Little from the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General's Office of Public Engagement to talk about how to use social media and technology safely and responsibly.

Social media has helped us become more connected than ever, but it also some real risks, especially for young people. Mr. Little educated the students about things like cyberbullying, the dangers of sharing personal information, and even explained what a digital footprint is. He stressed that even if someone deletes something from their phone, it can still be recovered.

The students were encouraged to think hard before they send messages on social media or in chats. Is it something they'd say in person? Is it something they'd want someone else to say to them? What could the consequences be?

Thank you to Mr. Little for coming by and having this very important conversation with our fifth graders.

The Turtle Creek staff wore pink on Tuesday, October 6 as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Day. As part of the campaign, the staff also raised funds for the Forbes Cancer Institute in Monroeville. All told, the staff raised $255!

Ms. Bacco-Pifer will be delivering the donation and a card from the staff to the Institute soon. Thank you to all of our staff members who showed their support and helped raise awareness!

Kindergarten students at Turtle Creek are spending some time in Bus School lately.

Thursday afternoon, fifth graders in the CHAMPS student leader program joined Ms. Armstrong and Ms. Miller-Richards as they visited Ms. Fitzwater's class and Ms. Morse's class to talk about how to ride a bus properly.

Everything is new to kindergarten students, especially this year in the school year. Helping them learn how to ride a bus in a safe and respectful way, whether it's to and from school or on a field trip, is an important step to making sure everyone feels comfortable.

Ms. Armstrong, Ms. Miller Richards, and the fifth graders came up with some great ways to teach the kindergarteners how to stay safe.

* Remain seated
* Inside voices
* Driver is the leader
* Everyone keeps their hands, feet, and objects to themselves

By doing those four things, everyone will RIDE the bus safely.

The kindergarten students also did some activities to go over those rules, and even learned a song and dance created by the team!

Each kindergarten class will spend some time in Bus School, with the hope that it encourages them to be responsible and safe on the bus.

Starting in October, the Woodland Hills School District Board of Directors will hold their meetings in new locations in order to better serve the community.

Agenda setting and legislative meetings will take place in the auditorium at Turtle Creek Elementary STEAM Academy, which is located at 126 Monroeville Avenue in Turtle Creek.

Committee meetings will be held in the LGI Room at Woodland Hills High School, located at 2552 Greensburg Pike in Churchill, which is where current agenda and legislative meetings are held.

Ms. Sachse's very first Pre-K class at Turtle Creek is growing up fast and now they're reading to head off to middle school. But before they officially become sixth graders, they returned to their former classroom for a visit with her! She even read them a story, just like when they were first in her classroom all those years ago.
