Tonight, UAPD mourns the loss of Retired K9 Boomer.
For nearly a decade, Boomer faithfully served The University of Alabama Police Department and the campus community with unwavering dedication, energy, and heart. From his first day in 2016 as an Explosive Detection Dog, Boomer quickly became more than just a working K9—he became a trusted partner, a protector, and a constant presence to all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Boomer logged more than 30,000 hours safeguarding our campus, athletic venues, and communities beyond. But Boomer’s legacy is not measured only in hours or assignments—it is defined by his spirit.
He faced every challenge with determination and resilience, continuing to serve despite cancer, multiple snake bites, and even the loss of a toe. Through it all, he never lost his energy or enthusiasm.
To those who knew him best, Boomer was hyper, playful, sometimes a little annoying—but always loyal, always dependable, and always ready to work. He gave everything he had to this department and to the University.
After a brief, sudden illness, the hard decision had to be made today to make sure this sweet natured and amazing dog didn't suffer.
Our hearts are broken for (Retired) FTO Hinkle and his family who were Boomer's family. Our prayers are with them during this difficult time.
Boomer's impact on UAPD & The University of Alabama will not be forgotten.
K9 Boomer, may you rest in peace.
