⚖️ Marine lawyers aren’t afraid to get some before they get to work.

Major Lucas, Staff Judge Advocate for Marine Corps Recruiting Command and an Alabama-barred attorney, recently visited the University of Alabama School of Law—but her day started well before the legal panel.

Before stepping into the classroom, Maj Lucas joined our Alabama pool for PT, then spent time mentoring our future Marine Officers and sharing perspective from her career. 💪⚓️

Later that day, she represented the Marine Corps alongside fellow military attorneys during The University of Alabama School of Law’s JAG Day, giving students insight into what it means to serve as both an attorney and a commissioned officer. ⚖️🇺🇸

In the Marine Corps, being a lawyer doesn’t exempt you from being a Marine first.

Courtroom or PT field—the standard remains the standard.

OST Tuscaloosa took training to Marion Military Institute for company PT followed by a Leadership Reaction Course (LRC).

The LRC challenged our applicants to quickly assess problems, communicate a plan, and lead their teams through obstacles with limited time and resources—the same type of leadership fundamentals they’ll be expected to demonstrate at Officer Candidates School. 🧠⚓️

Every event is another opportunity to prepare, develop, and raise the standard before they ever step foot at Quantico.

We don’t wait until OCS to start developing Marine Officers.

Our OCC Law Candidate and barred attorney, Taylor Goodall, is officially aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico and beginning the challenge of earning the title United States Marine. ⚖️🦅🌎⚓

Taylor has already proven himself in the legal profession. Now comes a different test—one designed to evaluate the leadership, character, mental, and physical qualities required of a Marine Officer.

🏆 Leadership earned. Victory achieved.

Before they ever lead Marines, Officer Candidates must first prove they can lead under pressure.

Last week, Jacob Talbot, an Auburn University cheerleader (Auburn University Cheerleaders) served as the Unit Leader for the Officer Candidate School Battalion Drill Competition at Marine Corps Base Quantico. His platoon rose to the challenge and won the competition, demonstrating the discipline, precision, and teamwork expected of future Marine Officers. 🇺🇸

Jacob has now successfully completed the requirements of Officer Candidate School to earn the title of Marine and will graduate this Saturday. We couldn’t be more proud of his accomplishment and look forward to welcoming him back to Alabama before he returns to Quantico for The Basic School.

OST Tuscaloosa Candidates show up and show OUT. Built Different isnt a motto for them. Its a lifestyle — and its proven.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. 🦅🇺🇸

Congratulations to Christopher Duff () and Ryan Adams () on successfully completing PLC Juniors at Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Virginia.

For six demanding weeks, they were tested mentally, physically, and morally. Every event challenged their ability to lead under pressure, make sound decisions, and persevere through adversity. They proved they have what it takes to continue the journey toward earning the title of United States Marine Officer.

This milestone is one earned through discipline, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. While many begin the journey, only those who refuse to quit reach this point.

The work isn’t over—but this is a significant step toward commissioning.

FROM THE LACROSSE FIELD TO THE MARINE CORPS

This month, Brandon Shaffner added another title to his résumé.

A former University of Montevallo lacrosse player, Brandon successfully completed Officer Candidates School, graduated from the University of Montevallo, and earned his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

Athletics help build discipline, toughness, and teamwork—but earning the title of Marine Officer requires an entirely different level of commitment. Through years of preparation, leadership development, and perseverance, Brandon met the challenge and joined the ranks of those entrusted to lead Marines.

Congratulations to 2ndLt Shaffner on this outstanding achievement. We are excited to see the impact he will make as he begins his career as a Marine Officer.
