217 VETS Illinois

217 VETS Illinois Re-instilling Veteran camaraderie in the pursuit of suicide awareness and prevention.
(1)

The transition from military to civilian life is not a smooth process for most Veterans. This transition can lead to challenges such as unemployment, PTSD/depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and an unstable family life. These challenges result in a higher rate of suicide in the Veteran community. We here at 217 VETS recognize, as Veterans ourselves, that the greatest thing most Veterans miss when

they take the uniform off is the bonds and camaraderie they experienced while in uniform. While we all have family and friends on the civilian side, nothing will ever come close to the bonds we made in the military. For us, the best way to serve Veterans, is to give them back what they miss the most, the camaraderie. Our mission is to work together to lower the risk of suicide among Veterans by re-instilling the camaraderie and relationships many are missing. To achieve this mission, we will be organizing several outings and events to bring Veterans together while helping them build relationships and a sense of purpose. We also offer a dedicated lounge space for Veterans and have weekly gatherings. For all of us here at 217 VETS, camaraderie is the essence of what binds people together, and we look to help rebuild those bonds for others like us!
