A disaster can happen with little warning. Having a family disaster plan helps ensure everyone knows what to do, where to go, and how to reconnect if you’re separated.

Your household disaster plan should include:
📍 Two meeting places—one near your home and one outside your neighborhood
📞 An out-of-area emergency contact everyone can call or text
🚪 Evacuation routes and multiple ways out of your home
🏫 Plans for children, including school emergency procedures
🐶 Arrangements for pets and anyone with access or functional needs
📄 A list of important phone numbers and emergency information

Take time to discuss your plan with everyone in your household and practice it regularly. A plan only works if everyone knows it.

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave them to the professionals. Join your community for a public fireworks display and make memories with family and friends while helping protect lives, homes, and neighborhoods. In Division 4, public fireworks displays will be held at:

Our Battalion 2 Firefighter of the Year, Jysiah Davis, was honored this morning at Yorba Linda Rotary Club’s annual Sunrise Fire & Police Recognition Breakfast. Congratulations again to Jysiah and thank you to the Yorba Linda Rotary Club for continuing this longstanding tradition of recognizing those who serve.

When disaster strikes, access to stores, power, and basic services may be limited. A disaster supply kit helps ensure your family has the essentials needed to stay safe and self-sufficient for at least three days.

Your kit should include:
💧 Water (1 gallon per person, per day)
🥫 Non-perishable food and a manual can opener
🔦 Flashlights and extra batteries
📻 A battery-powered radio
🩹 First aid supplies and medications
🧤 Heavy gloves and basic tools
🐶 Food, water, and supplies for pets
📄 Copies of important documents and cash

Remember to consider the unique needs of everyone in your household, including children, older adults, and pets. Keep kits at home, in your vehicle, and at work, and make sure they are portable in case evacuation becomes necessary.

Preparedness starts before an emergency. Build or buy your kit today so you’re ready when it matters most.

During this week’s Yorba Linda City Council meeting, Division Chief Morganstern provided an overview of OCFA’s many wildfire prevention and preparedness efforts and supported the council’s proclamation recognizing Wildfire Awareness and Prevention Season. We are grateful to the City of Yorba Linda for its continued support of our critical mission to protect life and property from the devastating effects of wildfires.

Among the updates Chief Morganstern shared was the announcement that, beginning July 1, OCFA will enhance staffing to support 24-hour bulldozer operations. Our bulldozers are capable of cutting fire breaks and assisting firefighters on the ground during wildfire suppression operations.

After reviewing many of the additional resources that OCFA can leverage to mitigate and fight wildfires, including strategically placed wildland cameras and heli-hydrants, Chief Morganstern reminded residents to visit ocfa.org and take advantage of our Ready, Set, Go! program. 🧯 Fire extinguishers can save lives and property—but only when the fire is small, you have a clear escape route, and smoke and heat have not filled the room. Knowing when and how to use one is just as important as having one.

Did you know OCFA offers free safety presentations for businesses, civic groups, and community organizations? Presentations include a variety of safety topics, and groups can request hands-on fire extinguisher training to learn the P.A.S.S. method:

☑️ Pull the pin
☑️ Aim low at the base of the fire
☑️ Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
☑️ Sweep side to side until the fire is out

Remember: Your number one priority is always to get out safely. If you’re unsure, evacuate immediately and call 9-1-1.

Presentations are available Monday through Friday and require a minimum attendance of 15 people in a public location.

Daisy Scouts from Troop 4292 visited Fire Station 43 in Tustin this week for a behind-the-scenes look at life at the fire station. The scouts explored the fire truck, learned about the tools and equipment firefighters use, and received lessons on both fire and water safety. They also earned their “Respect Authority” petal during the visit.

With summer activities in full swing, water safety remains essential. Remember:
💦 Never swim alone.
💦 Always follow the rules around pools and other bodies of water.
💦 Listen to lifeguards and trusted adults.

Preparation and coordination save lives.
 
This week, OCFA firefighters from Divisions 2, 4, and 6 joined up with Tustin PD officers to train in active shooter incident response. These challenging scenarios require seamless communication, common terminology, and a unified approach between fire and law enforcement.
 
The training was led by OCFA Division 4 Chief Mike Morganstern, an experienced instructor and widely recognized subject matter expert in active shooter incidents. Chief Morganstern teaches throughout Orange County, helping ensure agencies work collaboratively to provide the safest and most effective response possible.
 
While we hope these skills are never needed, our commitment to preparedness remains constant.

Are you prepared for a disaster? If not, don’t delay—prepare today!

Every year in June, the National Safety Council observes National Safety Month to promote safety in the workplace, at home, or anywhere you go. Year-round OCFA shares messaging on fire and life safety topics, and in June we want to emphasize the importance of preparing for emergencies by having a disaster supply kit, household disaster plan, and knowing your home/work escape plan.

✅ Practice your home escape plan at least twice a year.
✅ Test your smoke alarms once a month.
✅ Disaster supply kits should have enough necessities to last everyone in your family at least three days.
✅ Consider your individual family needs, including pets, when making a disaster supply kit.
✅ When entering any building, take a moment to identify exits in case of an emergency.
