September is National Emergency Preparedness Month, and out here in the high desert, being ready for the unexpected is part of daily life. FEMA's Ready.gov recommends storing at least one gallon of water per person, per day, with a three day supply on hand in case of emergency. Round out your kit with nonperishable food, a flashlight, extra batteries, and a battery powered or hand crank radio, then check it once a year to swap out anything expired. Twentynine Palms Water District encourages every household to build a basic emergency water kit this month. Water, along with those other essentials, can make all the difference during extreme heat events, power outages, or other unexpected disruptions. Stay ready, Twentynine Palms.

Back to school time is here! Twentynine Palms students returned to class in August. Wishing our students and teachers a great start to the year. With summer heat still in full swing out here in the high desert, staying hydrated is especially important for kids walking to school or heading out for recess. Not only does it help them stay safe in the heat, researchers find that hydrated kids are more alert and retain more information in the classroom! Send them off with a refillable water bottle in every backpack, a simple habit that helps keep them cool, focused, and ready to learn.

Evaporative coolers, often called swamp coolers, are a desert staple. They use a fraction of the electricity of traditional air conditioning. But because they cool by evaporating water, they can also use several gallons of water per hour depending on size and maintenance. Here's how to stay cool while keeping that number as low as possible.

1. Check your bleed-off valve. Most swamp coolers have a small bleed-off line that continuously drains water to flush out minerals and prevent scale buildup. If it's set higher than necessary, it can waste water around the clock. Check your owner's manual and adjust it to the minimum setting that still prevents buildup.

2. Inspect your float valve regularly. A stuck or worn float valve can let your cooler's reservoir overflow, sending water straight down the drain without you ever noticing. A quick monthly check can catch this early.

3. Clean or replace cooling pads each season. Pads clogged with mineral deposits force your cooler to work harder and run longer to reach the same temperature, using more water and more energy in the process. Replacing worn pads at the start of the season keeps your system efficient.

4. Run it smart, not constant. Use your swamp cooler during the hottest parts of the day and switch to fans or natural airflow during cooler mornings and evenings. Less runtime means less water used overall.

A well-maintained swamp cooler doesn't just save water, it also cools your home more effectively. Small maintenance habits go a long way out here in the high desert. Stay cool, Twentynine Palms!

August is National Water Quality Month, and out here in the high desert, we don't take a single drop for granted. The Mojave Desert region around Twentynine Palms receives only a few inches of rain in an average year, which makes the work of a dependable public water system all the more essential. Twentynine Palms Water District tests and monitors our water in accordance with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, which sets strict limits on more than 90 regulated contaminants. Our certified operators and water quality staff work around the clock collecting samples and running tests so that every household in our district can count on clean, reliable water despite the harsh desert conditions. We're proud of the work they do every single day!

Native plants are built for our climate, but they still benefit from a little summer care. Water deeply but infrequently, once every week or two during peak heat, so roots grow deep and strong rather than depending on frequent watering. A 3-inch layer of mulch around each plant holds moisture in the soil longer and means you water less often.

While you are out there, check your drip emitters too. A clogged emitter means a plant is not getting what it needs, and in this heat that stress shows up fast.

Your native landscape is one of the best things you can do for our desert water supply. Looking to add some native plants to your yard? Check out this website to access guides and tips on how to get started: https://www.cnps.org/gardening/choosing-your-plants/native-planting-guides/download

Happy Independence Day from the Twentynine Palms Water District family!

Freedom means something a little different to everyone, but one freedom we all share is the ability to turn on the tap and trust what comes out. Safe, clean drinking water isn't something every community in the world can count on, but here in the Twentynine Palms, it's a promise we make to every household we serve, 365 days a year. We think that's worth celebrating today right alongside everything else that makes this country great.

While you're out enjoying the holiday with your loved ones, our on-call crew will be quietly keeping that promise — monitoring, maintaining, and making sure your water never skips a beat, even on the Fourth.

Heads up: our offices will be closed on Friday, July 3rd for the holiday. For water emergencies, please call our 24/7 line at (760) 367-7546.

🔍 Take the Summer Leak Detective Challenge!
Before the heat hits full force, take 15–20 minutes to walk through your home and check for hidden leaks. Look under sinks for drips, listen for a toilet that keeps running after you flush, and check your water meter — if the dial is moving when nothing is on, you've got a leak.

The average home leaks 10,000 gallons a year — roughly 270 loads of laundry — from worn washers and flappers that cost just a few dollars to fix.

Out here in the desert, every drop counts. Catching a small leak before peak summer demand means more water stays where it belongs.

Questions about what to look for? Give us a call or send us a message — we're happy to help!

Happy Earth Day!🌎

One of the simplest ways to protect our planet is by fixing household leaks. A small drip might not seem like much, but the average home can waste nearly 10,000 gallons of water each year due to leaks – enough to wash hundreds of loads of laundry. Water is one of Earth’s most vital resources, supporting our ecosystems, agriculture, and daily lives, yet much of it is lost before it’s ever used. Taking a few minutes this week to check faucets, toilets, and irrigation systems can make a meaningful difference in conserving water and reducing waste. This Earth Day, show your appreciation for our planet by making sure every drop counts!
