SUBJ MEMORIAL DAY MESSAGE 2022
REMARKS 1. Notable humanitarian, educator, and tennis player Arthur Ashe once said, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” Each year, Memorial Day offers us an opportunity to reflect on those who have given the last full measure in service to our great Nation and with the aim of securing freedom throughout the world. We owe the deepest debt of gratitude to all who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, and to the loved ones they left behind. This Memorial Day, let us remember the greatness of past generations and find inspiration in their courage, devotion, and selfless determination.
2. Each fallen hero is the embodiment of the valiant fighting spirit and devotion to duty that our Nation has come to expect of her Marines in times of crisis. From every generation, a select few rise up and put themselves in harm’s way to protect the ideals on which America was founded. Their stories serve as a continual reminder that freedom should not be taken for granted. We can’t rest on the sacrifices of past generations – peace, freedom, and global security require constant vigilance. Pacing threats around the globe uphold the truth of President Ronald Reagan’s sentiment that “freedom is never more than one generation from extinction.”
3. So this Memorial Day, we honor the courageous actions and sacrifices of our fallen heroes, and we look to them for inspiration as we prepare for the next battlefields. Technology and tactics may change, but the fighting spirit of United States Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, and Coast Guardsmen remains strong.
4. Enjoy this holiday weekend. Stay safe, and remember you are a living memorial to all our fallen heroes.
5. Semper Fidelis, David H. Berger, General, U.S. Marine Corps, Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Blade Family & Friends,
246th Birthday Message From General Berger, CMC
On 10 November 1970, Commandant Chapman challenged all Marines, active and inactive, young and old, deployed or recently returned from combat, “not to look back, but instead, to look to the future.” He insisted that we celebrate our anniversary, “not as an end of almost two centuries of dedicated service, but as preparation for new service, new dedication, and new achievement.” Those sage words resonate across time and are as applicable today as they were 51 years ago.

Our Corps holds to traditions that link us to the elite warriors who wore the uniform before us, but the traditions we hand down through the generations go far beyond tangible displays, symbols, or customs. The most important traditions that link us to our past and must be carried into the future are the intangible ones—traditions of courage, trust, discipline, loyalty, respect, perseverance, adaptability, and leadership. Today, 246 years since our warfighting legacy began, we celebrate those traits that have been forged in all Marines—past and present.

The character of Marines, our unwavering commitment and relentless pursuit of excellence, remains unchanged from that of past generations, even as the character of warfare is ever-changing. These changes will require us to do what Marines do best—adapt and innovate to win any battle or respond to any crisis. Just as Marines who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan over these past 20 years adapted to the demands of protracted counterinsurgency operations—which would have been all too familiar to the Marines of 1970—we will adapt to the demands of the present and future, while learning the hard lessons from our recent past.

We can’t know for certain where future battlefields will be, or how our methods of warfighting will be redefined as threats to our Nation evolve, but we can ensure that the Marines who fight those battles will be forged of the same courage, spirit, and warfighting excellence as all Marines before them.

We who serve today represent an unbroken chain that stretches back 246 years. As we mark our anniversary, we remember those who went before us, and as we look over the horizon to “new service, new dedication, and new achievement,” solemnly swear to uphold their example of honor, courage, and commitment.

Happy 246th Birthday, Marines!

Semper Fidelis,

David H. Berger

SUBJ INDEPENDENCE DAY
GENTEXT REMARKS 1. This year marks 245 years since 56 courageous patriots signed their names to the Declaration of Independence. Since then, our Nation has celebrated each 4th of July, the date the Second Continental Congress agreed to that Declaration, with such events as parades, social gatherings, cook-outs, and fireworks. But that first July 4th and the months that followed were not a time of leisure and celebration. It was a time of tenacious resolve – a time when the Declaration signers put their own lives on the line to birth a Nation established on the principles of liberty, equality, and justice for all people.
2. In his Independence Day speech of 1926, 30th President Calvin Coolidge stated, “We live in an age of science and of abounding accumulation of material things. These did not create our Declaration. Our Declaration created them.” For nearly a quarter of a millennium, America has enjoyed the great abundance of freedom. Though every nation stumbles from time to time, our founders gave us a strong foundation for extending that freedom to all people equally. When it comes to liberty, however, eloquent words and patriotic celebrations are meaningless without action. Whether that means treating all people with equal respect on an individual level or putting on a uniform and continuing the fight to defend our freedoms, we all have a responsibility to preserve the ideals of our Nation’s founding.
3. Independence Day offers us a time to reflect on what it means to serve and what role we can play in ensuring the vision for liberty and equality issued on 4 July 1776 continues to guide our Nation. As Marines, we take great pride in our heritage as our Nation’s expeditionary force-in-readiness, and we remain vigilant and ready to defend our freedoms when the Nation calls.
4. This past year has been an undeniably challenging one, and I hope this holiday will offer each of you an opportunity to gather safely with family and friends. Continue to be on guard to the health hazards we face and follow established guidelines throughout this holiday period. Above all, look out for each other and make sure everyone returns safe and ready to work.
5. To all Marines, Sailors, and families, I wish you a happy 4th of July.
6. Semper Fidelis, David H. Berger, General, U.S. Marine Corps, Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Blade Family and Friends,
MEMORIAL DAY MESSAGE 2021
From: David H. Berger, General, U.S. Marine Corps, Commandant of the Marine Corps.
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously said, "Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them." It is incumbent upon each of us to remember the uncommon courage of all who sacrifice their own lives to protect others and secure freedom. We owe the deepest debt of gratitude to all who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, and to the loved ones they left behind. Memorial Day provides us an opportunity each year to reflect on the exceptional valor and monumental sacrifice these heroes made to defend the many freedoms we enjoy.
2. The values of a nation are judged in history by those they honor. It's important that we honor individuals who have made the most profound contributions, and I can think of no contribution more profound than giving one's life in defense of our Nation. Throughout America's rich history, men and women from every generation have answered the call and put themselves in harm's way to preserve the American way of life. Our Corps must never forget the sacrifices made by every generation in every conflict, and we must never forget the sacrifices of the Marines we have lost. Each fallen hero is the embodiment of the valiant fighting spirit and devotion to duty that our Nation has come to expect of her Marines in times of crisis.
3. This Memorial Day serves to remind us of all that our fallen heroes have done for our Nation. Sent into harm's way in the name of liberty, these brave Americans fought alongside our allies to defend and advance security and freedom throughout the world. May we all take this opportunity to reflect on the courageous actions and sacrifices of all Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, and Coast Guardsmen who gave the last full measure.
4. Stay safe this holiday weekend, and remember you are a living memorial to all our fallen heroes.
