🏚️ On the last day of National Preservation Month, we’re taking a moment to recognize the historic places that help tell the story of Joshua Tree National Park.

Across the park, places like Ryan Ranch, Keys Ranch, and historic mining sites offer a glimpse into the people who lived, worked, ranched, mined, and made homes in this desert during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

These structures are part of the park’s cultural history, and they remind us that preservation is not only about protecting plants, wildlife, and landscapes. It is also about caring for the stories left behind.

When visiting historic sites, please help protect them. Stay outside closed structures, do not climb on ruins, leave objects where you find them, and give these fragile places the care they deserve.

Thank you for helping preserve Joshua Tree National Park for future generations. 🏜️

As spring turns into summer, temperatures in Joshua Tree National Park can rise quickly, and even a short visit can become more challenging than expected.

Before heading into the park, take time to plan ahead. Joshua Tree is a remote desert environment with limited shade, little to no cell service, and no food, water, or gas available inside the park.

A few things to keep in mind:

☀️ Check the full forecast. Look beyond the high temperature. Wind, humidity, UV index, and heat advisories can all affect how conditions feel once you are outside.

🥾 Choose a realistic itinerary. Plan hikes and activities that match your ability level, the time of day, and current weather conditions. Build in breaks, bring more water than you think you’ll need, and have a backup plan if conditions change.

📱 Use official sources. Check the NPS website and download the NPS App before your visit. Third-party information can sometimes be outdated or confusing, especially for first-time visitors.

🗺️ Stop by a visitor center. JTNPA information specialists and park staff can help you review your plans, pick up a map, and prepare for current conditions before entering the park.

Planning ahead can make all the difference. Stay safe, take it slow, and help make your visit to Joshua Tree National Park a good one.

🌱 Our youth education branch, DiscoverJTREE, is wrapping up a busy field trip season of exploration in Joshua Tree National Park with local students.

We’ve loved watching their curiosity grow through hands-on exploration of our local ecosystems. Thank you to Morongo Unified School District, our teachers, and the families who made these experiences possible.

This program is partially funded by the Outdoor Equity Grants Program, created through AB 209 and administered by California State Parks, Office of Grants and Local Services. 🌎

✨ The park doesn’t stop being magical after sunset.

Join Desert Institute at JTNPA for Cosmic Wonders: An Astronomy Experience in Joshua Tree, an evening under the stars inside Joshua Tree National Park.

Taking place at Cap Rock, this guided astronomy experience explores what makes Joshua Tree’s night skies so special and how we can help protect them from light pollution. Participants will also have the opportunity to view the stars and planets through a telescope. 🔭

The evening will be led by John Watkins, Ph.D., a former NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientist who contributed to the historic Voyager 1 and 2 missions and now teaches physics and astronomy at Copper Mountain College.
