One of the joys I've had doing this job is meeting a former student in the fleet and hearing he wants to become an instructor. I guess I did something right.

For anyone who has ever used the SOS rides in 29 Palms, I had the privilege of meeting the woman who is responsible for it: Erica Stone. Thank you for providing this service for Marines and Sailors for 8 years!

In Rare Company

To date, in the last five fiscal years, only three entry-level Marines have been reported to become Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) before graduating the Cyber Network Specialists Course. Here are the latest two Marines to join their ranks: LCpl Alexander Aurand and LCpl Clint Harris, both from CNSC 7-15. Two facts that make their accomplishment more remarkable are that they studied for their certifications on top of the regular curriculum along with the rest of their classmates and they became certified without completing all four modules of CCNA course (they only completed three). Congratulations to both future 0651s!

Students and instructors from DTS represented the newest unit on base, Communication Training Battalion, by volunteering in the community. This story was ran on the front page of a local newspaper, The Desert Trail, on May 7.

Insider's Note: The first portion of the CNSC curriculum is Information Technology Essentials or IT Essentials. It is a commercial course created by Cisco for the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) A+ certification. Designed to be taught throughout a semester, IT Essentials is taught here for a few weeks. Students learn fundamental concepts of IT, Personal Computer hardware and software. Having two major exams (a Mid-Term and a Final) during this portion of the course, students must pass both with a minimum of 70% before continuing into the next portion of CNSC, the Cisco Certified Network Associate Course (CCNAC).

We just received news that one of our former students recently became a Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP). Sgt Brian McMullen, stationed in Japan, was featured on this page as the May 2012 Student of the Month. He was also a CCNA Module 4 student and graduated from DTS in July 2012. Within a year of his graduation, Sgt McMullen was certified as a CCNA. He followed up with his CCNP around Dec 2014, less than two and a half years removed from the school house.

Considering the message in the previous post, Sgt McMullen will have no issues finding a decent paying job should he exit from the Marine Corps. Another great example of what our students can do! Congrats to Sgt McMullen!
