Faculty Friday: Shawn Willsey, Distinguished Professor of Geology

Shawn Willsey has been teaching geology at CSI for 22 years, helping students understand the stories behind the landscapes they see every day. He teaches Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Natural Disasters, Geology of National Parks, and Field Geology.

Shawn has always been fascinated by canyons, rivers, mountains, volcanoes, and the processes that create them. That curiosity led to a career in geology and eventually teaching, where he gets to introduce many CSI students to the subject for the very first time. His classes combine discussions, demonstrations, activities, and plenty of time in the field. Students learn how to separate observations from interpretations, analyze evidence, and understand the natural processes shaping the planet. Shawn says one of his main goals is for students to see the world differently and start recognizing the geologic stories happening all around them.

Before teaching, Shawn worked as a professional hydrogeologist and is a licensed professional geologist in Idaho. He is also the author of Geology Underfoot in Southern Idaho and co-author of Roadside Geology of Idaho. Outside of CSI, geology is still a pretty big part of Shawn's life. He travels to explore interesting landscapes and creates educational geology videos for an audience around the world through his YouTube channel. He also enjoys rock climbing, whitewater rafting, hiking, and cross-country skiing.

His advice to students: stay curious, get as much hands-on experience as you can, and be willing to explore where geology can take you.

As CSI’s Title V grant comes to a close, we’re looking back at the work, people and impact that have shaped the past four years. Through Title V, CSI strengthened connections with students and families, invested in faculty and staff learning, and explored more intentional ways to serve our Hispanic students and the Magic Valley community.

And while the grant is ending, the work is not.

Faculty are carrying new teaching practices into their classrooms, CSI continues to offer the Spanish for Heritage Speakers program, and a new Spanish for Health Professions program launched this semester. The relationships, conversations and lessons built through Title V will continue to shape how we serve students moving forward. Thank you to everyone who helped make this work possible and to those who will continue carrying it forward at CSI. 🦅

Faculty Friday: David Chambers, Associate Professor of Psychology

David Chambers has been teaching at CSI since 2011, first as a Dual Credit instructor before joining the college full time in 2017. Today, he teaches Introduction to Psychology, Child and Adolescent Development, and Introduction to Psychological Disorders.

David’s path into teaching started while he was still a student himself. During graduate school at Idaho State University, he had the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant and quickly realized how much he enjoyed helping students learn. So when the opportunity came to teach Dual Credit for CSI, he jumped in with both feet.

In his classroom, David works to make psychology feel approachable and relevant. Students sometimes come into his courses intimidated by the subject, but he reminds them that they already know more about psychology than they may realize simply from being human. His favorite classes are the ones where a real-world example suddenly clicks and the room comes alive with questions, stories, and discussion. David calls those moments “Dopaminergic Gold.” Rather than simply memorizing terms and definitions, students learn to think critically, apply psychological theories, and connect what they are learning to the world around them. David hopes those skills also help students build greater self-awareness, empathy, open-mindedness, and compassion.

One thing students are often surprised to discover is just how broad psychology really is. It goes far beyond talking about feelings and shows up in nearly every part of our lives.

Outside of CSI, David enjoys spending time outdoors and hiking, which he says is one of his favorite ways to reset and clear his head. And despite the energy and excitement he brings to the classroom, students might be surprised to learn he is actually an introvert who prefers quiet and solitude over large gatherings.

His advice to students: psychology can be rigorous, but it is also accessible, relevant, and worth exploring. Give yourself the chance to see where it takes you.

Day 2… but another first day for a whole lot of Golden Eagles. 🦅 Tuesday/Thursday classes got underway today, which meant even more students arriving on campus for their first classes of Fall 2026. Some are coming back for another semester, while others are just beginning their time at CSI. Either way, we’re happy to see Eagle Country filling up again. Here’s to a great semester!

There were a lot of boxes, full cars, trips up and down the stairs, and probably a few bittersweet goodbyes on campus today. đź’› Move-in day brought new and continuing students back to Eagle Hall, and our faculty, staff, and volunteers were there to help students and families get everything through the doors and settled in. A huge thank you to everyone who showed up to help today.

And to the families who headed home with a little more room in the car than they arrived with, thank you for trusting CSI to be their home away from home. Welcome home, Golden Eagles!
