work weekend in a few days, Sep. 25-26. Camp will serve meals. Cabins are still available. If any one is interested in staying in a cabin, call the Scout office at (208) 733-2067. There are also still seats available on the council van. The cost for the van is $10/person (to cover fuel).

Worried about no-see-ums and mosquitoes at camp this year? Besides the Picaridin repellents mentioned on this page earlier, other long-time campers at Bradley have had good luck with two additional items: garlic and menthol. One of our long-time volunteers starts taking garlic supplements a few weeks before coming to camp and tells us that the no-see-ums and mosquitoes leave him alone. One of our camp rangers uses lotion with Menthol and reports us that no-see-ums stay away from him as well.

has a few staff openings that have just come up. We are looking for adult (18+) area directors in archery and nature. We are also looking for an area director in Scout craft from July 12-Aug 1. We have a couple other instructor age (16-17 years) positions open. We always welcome CITs (age 14-15) at camp. If you are interested in any of these positions, contact Russ Nash at 208-539-8016 or the Snake River Council Service Center at 208-733-2067.

Thinking about no-see-um protection at this summer? Some of our council's long-time volunteers and summer residents at Camp Bradley have found that Picaridin is an effective repellent for both no-see-ums and mosquitoes. Learn more about Picaridin here: http://bit.ly/1zK6CYm. Last week I found a bottle of repellent with 20% Picaridin at one of our local Magic Valley retailers. It cost me about $6.50/bottle with tax.

Are you new at this year? If so, you need to know about no-see-ums. They are abundant at Camp Bradley. The article below describes what happens when they bite. It does not, however, give much hope for control. But don't worry! Long-time campers at Bradley have discovered ways to protect themselves from no-see-ums. I will share their tips with everyone in the month of May on the page.

, one question that arises every year is, "What kind of knife can I carry at camp?" As camp administrators, we have discussed this and have reworded our camp policy accordingly. We are not as concerned about size as we are about style (size still matters, though). The Guide to Safe Scouting recommends folding knives. We ask that Scouts not bring tactical/combat, fantasy, two-edged knives, Bowie knives, or anything else that is large and unsuited to the purposes of Scout camp. Work knives, whittlers, folding hunters, and everyday-carry knives are great candidates for camp. Some fixed blade knives are appropriate for certain activities.

Here is a list of knives I am considering for my own everyday camp knife. You'll notice that I'm a fan of CRKT knives, but there are many other good knife companies. Please reply to this post and share links to your favorite manufacturer's knives which are similar to these in size and purpose. If you are in the market for a knife for Scout camp, I hope this post gives you guidance. Have fun shopping!
