While we've finally seen some much-needed rain in areas of Muskegon County and the temperatures have cooled off a bit... Mother Nature didn't send us a permission slip just yet.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has issued a NO OPEN DEBRIS BURNING restriction for all of Muskegon County, which includes Blue Lake Township.

🚫 No open debris burning is permitted at this time. 🚫

We know it's tempting to get rid of those brush piles after the recent rain, but the ground and vegetation can still dry out quickly, and conditions remain favorable for fire spread.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation. A little patience now helps prevent a big emergency later.

At Blue Lake Township Fire Department, we take pride in working hand-in-hand with our partners at WHITE LAKE AMBULANCE AUTHORITY to provide the highest level of care when our community needs it most.

When emergencies become all hands on deck, our firefighters don’t just assist on scene—they often ride in the back of the ambulance alongside the paramedics, providing critical patient care while another firefighter takes the wheel to safely and efficiently transport the patient to the hospital.

That was exactly the case today.

By working together as one team, we were able to ensure the patient received continuous, advanced care from the moment we arrived on scene until they reached the hospital as quickly and safely as possible.

This is what the fire service and EMS are all about—putting the patient first, supporting one another, and working seamlessly together when every second counts.

A big thank you to our partners at White Lake Ambulance Authority for the outstanding teamwork. Together, we’re committed to providing the best possible care for the residents and visitors of our community.

Last Wednesday, Blue Lake Township Fire Department was honored to assist with a special event at Owasippe Scout Reservation as the Michigan State Police Aviation Unit flew in for the Scout Fair.

A huge thank you to the Michigan State Police Aviation team for making the trip from Flint to spend time with the Scouts and share an up-close look at one of Michigan’s incredible aviation resources. Opportunities like this create lasting memories and inspire the next generation of leaders and first responders.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to Owasippe Scout Reservation for organizing this outstanding event and making it possible for the Scouts to experience such a unique opportunity.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day a success. We appreciate the partnerships that strengthen our community and provide meaningful experiences for our youth.

Russell Road is back OPEN to traffic.

Thanks to Muskegon County Road Commission, McCormick Sand, and Owasippe Scout Reservation for working quickly to make the necessary repairs to the damaged Dam.

ROAD CLOSURE UPDATE – RUSSELL ROAD

UPDATE: 6/20 1700 Hrs - Roadway back OPEN to traffic.

The Muskegon County Road Commission is currently on scene and working diligently alongside other responding crews to rectify the situation on Russell Road at Cleveland Creek due to a damaged dam upstream causing stronger than usual water flow through culvert across Russell Rd.

⚠️ Russell Road remains CLOSED at this time between Silver Creek & Owasippe Rds. ⚠️

For your safety and the safety of emergency personnel and road crews, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THROUGH THE BARRICADES. The closure is in place for a reason, and unauthorized access creates unnecessary hazards. The closure was prompted by Muskegon County Road Commission as a proactive approach to the safety of motorist traveling through this area if the culvert is to fail or wash out the roadway.

Please continue to seek alternate routes and allow crews the space they need to safely complete their work.

We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation. Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.

On Monday Blue Lake Township Fire Department was requested to assist the Michigan State Police in the search for a missing kayaker on the White River.

BLFD personnel responded with manpower and water resources to support the search efforts. Working alongside the Michigan State Police , the operation involved a coordinated response from numerous agencies, including Muskegon Central Dispatch, Oceana County Central Dispatch, Muskegon County Sheriff's Office, City of Muskegon Police Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources , MSP Aviation Team, Holton Township Fire & Rescue , Hesperia Area Fire Department , and Grant Township Fire Department.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to Happy Mohawk Canoe Livery for providing valuable resources that assisted responders during the search operation. Community partners play an important role during incidents such as these, and their willingness to help is greatly appreciated.

We are grateful for the outstanding cooperation, professionalism, and teamwork demonstrated by all agencies and partners involved throughout the search. Most importantly, we are pleased to report that the missing individual was located safely approximately 9 miles up stream at Pines Point.

A very special thank you goes out to the Blue Lake Township Fire Department Canteen. Their dedication to providing meals, snacks, beverages, and much-needed support to responders on scene ensured that crews remained fueled, hydrated, and ready to continue the mission. The behind-the-scenes work performed by our Canteen volunteers often goes unnoticed, but it is an invaluable part of emergency operations. We are incredibly thankful for their commitment, generosity, and unwavering support of first responders.

Incidents like these highlight the importance of strong partnerships, mutual aid, and community support. Thank you to everyone who played a role in bringing this incident to a successful conclusion and ensuring a safe outcome.
