Today, with a full room of family, friends, colleagues, retired members, and community leaders in attendance, Mayor Sam Scaffide officially swore in Twinsburg Fire's newest Fire Chief, Earl Wilson.

Chief Wilson is certainly no stranger to the Twinsburg Fire Department. Over the past 32½ years, he has faithfully served our community, most recently as Fire Captain since 2021 and as Interim Fire Chief following the retirement of Chief Steven Bosso. His service extends beyond Twinsburg as well, bringing nearly 40 years of fire service experience from multiple communities and a wealth of knowledge and perspective to the position.

Joining Chief Wilson for this special occasion were his wife, Toni; daughter, Olivia; and parents, Marilyn and Herb. While unable to attend due to work commitments, daughters Emily and Madison and son Noah were certainly present in spirit as their father reached this significant career milestone.

During his remarks, Mayor Scaffide highlighted one word that best describes Chief Wilson: integrity.

Integrity is more than a character trait—it is a commitment to doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. It means being honest, ethical, accountable, and consistent in your actions and decisions. Throughout his career, Chief Wilson has demonstrated these qualities through his dedication to his profession, his department, and the community he serves.

For these reasons and many more, the members of the Twinsburg Fire Department are proud to welcome Chief Earl Wilson as our next Fire Chief. We look forward to his leadership as we continue our path of growth, innovation, and unmatched service to the residents of Twinsburg.

Today marked a proud milestone for the Twinsburg Fire Department and the City of Twinsburg as we officially swore in two new Firefighter/Paramedics.

Mayor Sam Scaffide had the honor of administering the Oath of Office to Declan Allan and Matthew Dunn as they begin their careers serving our community. Their commitment to public service strengthens our department and continues our mission of protecting the residents and visitors of Twinsburg with professionalism, compassion, and dedication.

A special moment during today’s ceremony was Firefighter/Paramedic Declan Allan being pinned by his father, Brian Allan, alongside the support of his mother Deidre, brother Kevin, and sister Delaney who were all in attendance. This marks Declan’s first fire department position, and we are excited to watch his growth and career development in the years to come. Outside of the fire service, Declan enjoys spending time with family and friends, especially outdoors. His active lifestyle and passion for sports truly shine through on the golf course.

Firefighter/Paramedic Matthew Dunn was pinned by his mother, Lisa, while his father, Paul, was also in attendance to witness this momentous occasion. Matthew joins Twinsburg Fire bringing previous valuable experience as a full-time Fire Medic with Brooklyn Heights Fire, part-time experience with Newburgh Heights Fire, and emergency room experience from Parma Hospital. Outside of work, Matthew is a passionate sports enthusiast, with basketball being his favorite.

We would also like to thank Mayor Sam Scaffide and City Council for their continued support of the Twinsburg Fire Department. Additionally, thank you to all the family members, friends, city employees, and supporters who came out to witness and celebrate these two young men as they begin their careers with Twinsburg Fire.

This past weekend, the Twinsburg Fire Department responded to a call for a person experiencing a cardiac emergency. Before EMS crews arrived, bystanders immediately stepped in and began CPR while also using an AED.

Because of their quick actions, an unconscious person in cardiac arrest regained responsiveness and was able to communicate prior to transport. Today, that individual is recovering in the hospital instead of families making funeral arrangements.

From the time our dispatchers received the call to EMS arrival was 6 minutes and 25 seconds. In a cardiac arrest, those minutes matter. Brain damage can begin within minutes without oxygen, which is why early CPR and early AED use are so critical.

This incident is a powerful reminder that bystanders truly make the difference. You do not have to be a firefighter, paramedic, or nurse to save a life. Learning CPR and becoming familiar with AED use can give someone a second chance at life while emergency crews are responding.

We want to recognize and thank the individuals who stepped up without hesitation. Your actions made a direct impact and are a true example of community helping community.

Today, Twinsburg Fire Department was proud to host a Shore Support Training bringing together members from multiple local agencies for an important day of hands-on learning and teamwork. A huge thank you to Scott Simmons who is the Dive Commander from Portage County Dive Team for leading an excellent class and emphasizing the critical role shore support plays during dive emergencies.

Shore support is a vital part of any dive operation — assisting with diver safety, communication, accountability, equipment management, scene coordination, and helping ensure divers can safely complete their mission. Strong shore support can make all the difference during an emergency response.

We would also like to thank Valley Fire District and Aurora Fire Department for coming out to train and work together to strengthen our teamwork and capabilities.

Lastly, thank you to the residents of Twinsburg for your cooperation and patience while we conducted this important training in the community. We appreciate your continued support as we work to keep our communities safe.

Twinsburg Fire is saddened to announce the passing of former member Denis L. Salsgiver. Denis served as a volunteer firefighter from December 1, 1973, to January 1, 1986.

A longtime resident of Twinsburg and dedicated supporter of the Fire Department, Denis will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

We are grateful for his many years of service and commitment to our community.
