Woodland Dunes Nature Center and Preserve Woodland Dunes is a 1,500 acre nature preserve based on globally significant habitat, including an environmental education center located in Two Rivers, WI.

Woodland Dunes offers beautiful nature trails, educational exhibits, and family programs while protecting our globally significant habitat through effective land management practices. We offer hiking trails, educational exhibits, and hands-on learning for both children and adults. Our beautiful trails are open from sunrise to sunset each day. "Pretty much everywhere along the trail and throughout the prairie are the bright yellow sunflower-like blooms of the short statured lanceleaf coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata). The cheery flowers of this plant are very inviting to our native pollinators"

Phenology Highlight: Thirteen-lined ground squirrel babies spotted around the building 💕

Thirteen-lined ground squirrel pups develop their stripes at around 12 days old. Around 4 - 6 weeks old they begin to leave the burrow to explore the outside world! Soon after they are fully independent.

Our staff’s favorite series for June is… Our Favorite Trail 🥾

Max (Land Manager): Black Cherry Trail

“There is so much native plant diversity along this trail. You can see large hemlock, white pine, beech, red maple and yellow birch (amongst others). One of our boardwalks goes past a large cedar tip-up where you can stop and appreciate the massive scale of their root systems and their incredible ability to keep growing even when they’ve fallen over. It’s also a great trail to see spring wildflowers and enjoy fall color.”

🥾Black cherry and Trillium Trail meander, often concurrently, through the ridges and swales of an ancient beach. You’ll pass through upland mixed hardwoods and a wooded swamp, catching glimpses of birds and amphibians in the spring, summer, and fall. Several small bridges cross these seasonally wet swales. Trillium Trail also connects with the the Ice Age Trail before looping back to Black Cherry Trail. Parking is available at the end of Goodwin Road, please do not block the green gate.

Our Dunes Treasure Adventure Summer Camp was a success... we found the hidden treasure! 🔍 (Session 2)
6 & 7 year old campers deciphered hidden clues that led us through various camp activities... and to the treasure map! Campers learned how to use a compass to guide us on our journey down Willow Trail. We found hidden map pieces, the key, clues left behind by the animals around us, and the hidden treasure chest - full of treasures that campers got to keep to help them on future adventures! 😎

It was a damp day for the Families on the Move Forest Hike - perfect for finding amphibians! Families found spring peepers, wood frogs, a blue-spotted salamander and a red-backed salamander. They climbed on fallen trees, enjoyed the smell of the wet forest, and had lots of questions.

Fairy shrimp are small crustaceans that swim belly up through the water. They have over eleven gill-like feet that help them swim and breathe. They are an indicator of a vernal pool, as they thrive in areas without fish (that would eat them). Their eggs are able to withstand the vernal pools drying out in the summer and freezing in the winter, the eggs can wait up to two decades until conditions are favorable to hatch!

There are still a few spots left on our upcoming guided hike: Forget-me-not Creek Tour - This WEDNESDAY, June 24th from 7:00 - 8:30 AM 🐟

Take a tour of the newly restored Forget-me-not Creek project with our director Sue Crowley and fisheries biologist Dr. Titus Seilheimer.

Registration for this guided hike is required - to register email [email protected] or call the nature center at 920-793-4007. This guided hike is free for members and a sliding scale fee of $3-10 for non-members. 🐟
