Our staff’s favorite series for the month of May is… Flowers! 🌼

Kennedy (Naturalist): Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium)

“I remember the first time I stumbled upon this plant in a prairie at Woodland Dunes. I had never seen one before, and had to immediately figure out what that strange looking plant was! I love the unique looking flowers and leaves that this plant has and it always makes me smile seeing it in our prairies and gardens here.”

Facts:
🌼Blooms Mid-Summer
🌼According to the Xerces society, one flower stalk can have 10 - 40 flowerheads, with each head having around 106 individual flowers. This means a single plant has between 1,060 - 4,240 flowers!
🌼The name “rattlesnake master” came from European settlers thinking that Native Americans used this plant to heal snake bites, however, though this plant is/was used for medicinal purposes, it was not for snake bites.
