LEAF PICKUP WELL UNDERWAY

With a return to near-normal temperatures and the melting away of our early snowfall, leaf pickup is back in full swing.

'Looks like this coming weekend will offer good raking weather. Please try to wrap up any placement of leaves at curbside, as City crews will be making one last round of pickup in the three days before Thanksgiving...and maybe a few days after the holiday, if weather permits.

NEW DOWNTOWN CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

With Todd Messman of the City's Electric Utility in the bucket and Mark Jacquette of City Hall Maintenance as "ground man," the first phase of Two Rivers' new downtown Christmas decorations--lit wreaths and garlands on downtown street lights--are going up.

Phase 2 of the project will be hiday-themed banners on poles at the downtown intersections.

Thanks to all of the donors who have made this project possible! That's the spirit of Two Rivers!

FALL LEAF PICKUP (WITH A LITTLE SNOW ON THE SIDE) CONTINUES UNTIL THANKSGIVING

Conditions have been far from ideal, but City Public Works crews will continue to collect leaves from curbside this week, hitting the East Side on Monday, between the rivers Tuesday through Thursday, and South Side on Friday.

The week of November 25, crews will do their best to make one final round of leaf collection, City-wide, in the three days prior to Thanksgiving.

Watch for updates, and thank you for your patience.

THANK YOU, VETERANS

Members of American Legion Post 165 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1248 gathered in Central Park at 11:00 AM today for a snowy Veterans Day observance.

Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice between the Allies and Germany took effect. Originally called Armistice Day in observance of that historic event, the November 11 holiday was re-named Veterans Day in 1954.

THANK YOU, GOVERNOR EVERS--MARINE SANCTUARY NOMINATION BACK ON TRACK

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, accompanied by U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, came to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc today to announce that he was reactivating the State of WI's request that an area of Lake Michigan off our shores be designated by NOAA as the Lake Michigan -- Wisconsin National Marine Sanctuary.

City Manager Greg Buckley, along with the Mayors of Manitowoc, Sheboygan and Port Washington, met with the Governor back in April, urging him to put the Sanctuary designation process "back on track." City Councils in all four cities have supported the Sanctuary designation since before it was submitted by Governor Scott Walker, back in 2014.

Governor Walker had rescinded the nomination back in February 2018, based on concerns expressed by parties opposed to the Sanctuary.

In addition to meeting with the coastal city leaders back in April to hear their arguments in favor of the Sanctuary, Governor Evers also met with Sanctuary opponents, and has modified the State's proposal to address many of their concerns. The Sanctuary area now excludes Mequon, whose city leaders wanted out, and has added Kewaunee and Algoma, where local leaders wanted. in. it will extend up to the ordinary low water mark on Lake Michigan, not the ordinary high.

The primary intent of the proposed Sanctuary is to preserve the many shipwrecks beneath Lake Michigan off our shores, to publicize this unique resource, and to educate not only Wisconsinites but also visitors on the rich, lake-faring history of this part of America's Great Lakes coast.

Community and business leaders in the first National Marine Sanctuary on the Great Lakes, in Alpena, Michigan, have cited considerable community tourism and economic benefits from the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
