TWO RIVERS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN DOMAZLICE, NOVEMBER 2019

Teachers Andy Pagel and Jessica Otte accompanied a group of TRHS students on a musical exchange to Domazlice in November 2019. The trip included a joint concert with students from Domazlice and its other sister cities, in Germany and France.

Two Rivers looks forward to welcoming a group of students from Domazlice in May 2021.

In the meantime, we salute our Czech friends on this Liberation Day--75 years since the end of WWII in Domazlice.

FOREVER LINKED BY HISTORY

With buildings dating to the 12th century, our Sister City in the Czech Republic has seen a lot of history.

75 years ago, on May 5, 1945, it witnessed the arrival of an advance unit from General Patton's Third Army, which rolled into town as its German occupiers retreated or where taken prisoner.. That unit was headed by Lt. Col. Matt Konop from Two Rivers--whose grandparents emigrated to Manitowoc County from Domazlice in the 1860's.

The townspeople hoisted Konop on their shoulders, proclaiming "We are liberated by one of our own."

Today, that historic link between Domazlice and Two Rivers is celebrated by our Sister Cities partnership, which has seen a delegation from Domazlice visit Two Rivers in July 2018 and delegation from Two Rivers travel to Domazlice in May 2019.

Better yet, the involvement of educators from both communities resulted in an exchange visit by Two Rivers High School band students to the Czech Republic in November 2019 and a planned visit by Czech students to Two Rivers in May 2020. While the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the visit by Domazlice students to be postponed to May 2021, we look forward to welcoming them, and to resuming this important cultural exchange.

In the meantime, Two Rivers salutes Domazlice on the 75th anniversary of its liberation at the end of WWII. Best wishes on this Liberation Day to our friends in the Czech Republic!

RESTORING THE POWER

The north side of Two Rivers just "powered back up," thanks to the great work of our Electric Utility crew.

Power was off for a couple hours, largely due to a big limb from a white pine along 45th Street near Tannery that took out WPS and City lines that share poles in that area. Downed limbs on 43rd and in the area of 31st and Lowell also contributed to the outages.

Well done, guys!

COMMEMORATING A 75-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, in 1945.

In the waning days of the war in Europe, General George Patton's Third Army entered western Czechoslovakia, liberating cities and villages along the way.

On May 5, 1945, an advance unit of American GI's, led by Lt. Col. Matt Konop of Two Rivers, entered the town of Domazlice--coincidentally, the very town from which his grandparents had emigrated in the 1860's to resettle in Stangelville in Manitowoc County.

Today, thanks to the efforts of Patrick Dewane, grandson of Matt Konop, Domazlice and Two Rivers are Sister Cities. We have celebrated our unique historic link with exchange visits of local leaders and residents in 2018 and 2019, and several Two Rivers High School band students traveled to Domazlice in November 2019 for a music-centered exchange visit.

A contingent of high school students from Domazlice was scheduled to visit Two Rivers in May, but that trip has been postponed, due to COVID-19.

While the current pandemic emergency precludes any exchange visits--for now--we fly the Czech flag at City Hall and on Washington Street in honor of our Czech friends and the history we share.

Watch for more posts as we approach May 5: Liberation Day in beautiful Domazlice.

For more on the story of Matt Konop, go to www.accidentalhero.net.

Why not fill the tank with cheap gas and take a long ride and look at all the scenery and if you have a family that you are staying at home with the better to take someone along. Bring a picnic basket and find a secluded spot to eat. :-)
