In Tybee History January 21, 2014 Cullen Chambers passes away.
Tybee lost a great friend. Cullen Chambers was a passionate man – passionate about his work, his community, and for finding a sensible middle ground in times when others differed on topics and solutions. He was a good listener and a great speaker. He was the champion for all he advocated for and cared for – the Tybee residents, businesses, and the historical importance and the greater good for our community. He would do anything for this little island and did what he promised, and he inspired the same spirit of volunteerism in others to come to the aid of the Lighthouse, restoring the Tybee Post Theater, saving a house slated for destruction, or any other purpose that would make Tybee a better place to be. Cullen served on the Tybee Tourism Council for over a decade and was a great mentor to others who served with him. If there was ever a sticky situation, Cullen found words of wisdom to help everyone see both sides and proposed simple ways to get to the root of the matter and find reasonable solutions. Not afraid to share his opinion, yet he never spoke an offensive word, rather he spoke with care and concern for what he believed in, and others listened to him. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him. He was not all business, but he was also a fun and caring person who would jump into anything Tybee threw at him gladly. Though not a reveler, he gladly accepted the role as Pirate King and he performed it with gusto. His true testimony is that which he did for our greatest historic monument, the Tybee Light Station, which shines due to his relentless preservation efforts and the ongoing promotion of our National Treasure. Cullen was a guiding light for Tybee and his work here has made a difference in who we are as a community and how we accomplish what we set up to do. He has left a great mark for us all to be proud of and to attempt to emulate in his memory.
