Today marks 190 years since the Battle of Gonzales – the opening shot of the Texas Revolution.
On October 2, 1835, Mexican troops arrived in Gonzales to seize a small cannon the government had given the town for defense against Comanche raids. The Texians refused. What started as 19 men defending their rights grew to over 140 volunteers overnight.
When the Texians marched to meet the Mexican dragoons, they carried a hastily sewn white flag. On it was a picture of the cannon, a lone star, and words that echo through our history: "Come and Take It."

The cannon was too small to matter militarily. But the principle behind keeping it mattered. Texians understood that you send diplomats for peace and soldiers for war. They would not be disarmed by a military dictatorship.

That small skirmish became the first battle of a war that ended seven months later at San Jacinto with Texas as an independent nation.

The spirit of Gonzales is the spirit of Texas. We wanted to be left alone then. We want to be left alone now. When government overreaches, Texans resist. Our history demands it. Our future requires it.

Remember Gonzales. Remember what Texians were willing to defend.
