Today, we remember a true American icon. Dolly Parton’s music, generosity, humor, and unmistakable spirit touched generations. And here in Tyler, we have a special connection to her story.

On February 7, 1972, Dolly Parton performed at Tyler’s historic Mayfair Building alongside Porter Wagoner. At the time, she was still on her way to becoming the legendary performer the world would come to know and love.

Today, the Mayfair is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its walls and wooden dance floor have witnessed nearly a century of Tyler history, from community celebrations and dances to performances by some of the biggest names in music, including Dolly. It’s remarkable to think that more than 50 years ago, Dolly Parton stood on the very same stage that still stands today.

That is why historic preservation matters. We aren't just saving buildings. We're saving the places where history happened. Today, we’re grateful that a small piece of Dolly Parton’s remarkable story is part of Tyler’s history, and that the Mayfair is still here to tell it.

Rest in peace, Dolly. Thank you for the music.

Congrats to Historic Tyler Secretary Laurie Ann Frank and her husband Stanley for receiving local landmark status from the City of Tyler today for the Wood-Frank house on Watkins. This is the first home in the Pollard Neighborhood to receive this recognition since the approval of the Pollard Historic District.
