Sunday mornings at 9:30, KZEY would air this famous preacher. Now how many of us back in the day got "rich for the word" by listening to a man whose full name was Fredrick J. Eikorenkoetter, II?

Over the years, KZEY has been the station to bring Juneteenth events every year. What is your favorite moment at these events KZEY threw in?

This is the creator of this page. He came to KZEY back in 1994-1995, 1998-1999, and 2000-2001. His many tours of duty has varied during his experiences from production to programming during the Community Broadcast Group era. He is currently running two internet stations in Longview, TX and a home based production house.

About 1972 0r 1973, KZEY turned to KLTV Channel 7 in doing a weekly music show that was taped at Matt Walker's club. It was aired during the spring or summer. Soul Town was a 30 minute program that is also a first for KLTV and the East Texas viewing public to show African-Americans on television. The show was modeled after a syndicated music dance program Soul Train which was aired nationally two or three years earlier. Soul Town, as you know, was local.
Now, here is another known fact similar from east of Tyler. The earliest of blacks on TV took place in Shreveport, LA back in 1955 when KOKA turned to a new TV station KTBS (an NBC affilaite, now ABC) to broadcast a weekly music program.

If you were on TV when Soul Town aired, what are your fondest memories of this East Texas television show?

A veteran of KZEY since 1973. He was the midday personality on the Mighty 690 and later has worn many hats. Donny Clements (1951-2015) has been a fixture at KZEY playing your favorite hits and later when the station went 24 hours about the near mid80s, he hosted a nighttime slow jam show. After leaving KZEY in 1984, he went to do overnights for KTYL before returning to the Mighty 690 about 1986. With his signature baseball cap and dark glasses, you can sure bet that the voice on your dial is none other than Donny Still on KZEY

KZEY's legendary status stays strong in East Texas. Beginning in 1971, this Mighty 690 veteran wore all kinds of hats from programming, to sales, to operations. Plus he is the one responsible to launch East Texas first local black dance TV show (Soul Town) on KLTV in addition to Juneteenth events including the Miss Juneteenth contest. All with help of staff puts KZEY on the map! In additon, he also launched urban programming in 1986 after KROZ's 10 and a half year run as a country station (due to heavy competition from KNUE) to became Tyler's first urban FM (1986-1989) His long association started in 1971 after finishing his broadcast courses in California. This would be his only stations he has been long committed to until 1995. The man with the plan I speak of is Mr. KZEY himself, the late Mr. Matt Walker (1941-2007)
