Fire Station Discussion: A Real Reset Is Needed

The Select Board has expressed a desire to continue the fire station discussion, but their direction to the Fire Station Building Committee appears focused on better communication or a smaller version of the same proposal.

That is not a reset. That is an attempt to repackage a project voters already rejected.

The Fire Station Building Committee did an excellent job within its restricted scope: overseeing the development of program requirements, design, construction planning, and delivery of a new fire station at the prescribed location of 250 Middlesex Road. There was an abundance of communication from that committee to the public and to the Select Board throughout the process. The project did not fail because of a lack of effort by the committee.

I believe the next step should include a transparent comparison of alternatives, a serious review of tax impact, a timeline driven by complete analysis rather than artificial deadlines, and a clear separation of the Winslow School issue from fire station planning.

Tonight’s Select Board meeting includes discussion regarding the future direction of the Fire Station Building Committee following the recent Town Meeting vote rejecting the proposed centralized fire station project.

Ahead of that discussion, I submitted the attached letter to the Select Board, Town Manager, Fire Chief, and Fire Station Building Committee encouraging the Town to evaluate additional ideas and alternatives moving forward, including a phased two-station public safety strategy.

As we look to elect a new Select Board Chair, we should ask each candidate whether they regurlarly recite the pledge of Allegiance to our great country, and if they choose NOT to, which is their right, to provide transparency and publicly express their reasoning to our community - especially to our active service members and the families of those who have fallen.

Every citizen has freedom of speech, but not freedom of consequence.
