maintain true friendships. Weekly groups include conversation skills, social and resiliency lessons with dozens of entertaining, and often hilarious, games.

I just looked down at the bookmark I was using and realized I was holding a pretty good lesson about relationships in my hand.

My son made this for me when he was little. He’s 27 now.

On one side he wrote, “Mom, you are nice, kind, pretty and sweet.” On the other, “To Mommy, from Trenty. I love you.”

But what really got me was the bottom.

He drew me running and playing tennis because those were my things back then. He knew what I liked. He paid attention.

And all these years later, I’m still using the bookmark.

We sometimes make connecting with people much more complicated than it needs to be. One of the simplest ways to make someone feel important to you is to notice them.

Remember what they like. Ask about something they told you. Send them something because you know they’ll think it’s funny. Remember that they play tennis, love hummingbirds, have a big meeting coming up, or always order the same thing at the coffee shop.

People feel connected to us when they feel like we actually know them.

Apparently “Trenty” understood that a long time ago. ❤️

Sometimes there is one part of making and keeping friends where a child or teen could use a little extra support.

Maybe handling teasing is hard. Maybe they struggle with knowing what to say when there's a conflict, reading whether someone is interested in talking, or figuring out what to do when a friendship changes. Maybe they don't know how to turn a classmate into a friend.

That's the idea behind our new Simply Social Power Ups™.

Power Ups are focused, 90-minute social skills workshops where kids and teens can learn about a specific social challenge and, most importantly, practice what to do.

Our first Power Up is:
From Classmates to Friends

✨Approaching someone and starting a conversation
✨Joining a conversation that's already happening
✨Finding common ground
✨Adding to a conversation instead of changing the subject
✨Figuring out whether someone is receptive
✨Following up after a good interaction
✨Moving from talking at school to actually spending time together

Saturday, October 3
Ages 8-12: 1:00-2:30 PM
Ages 13-17: 3:00-4:30 PM

Social misunderstandings can be really difficult for kids, and for parents trying to help them.
A child might come home absolutely convinced that someone was being mean, excluding them, or intentionally trying to upset them.
Their feelings about what happened are real.
But understanding a social situation also means looking at what happened before, what the other person may have been thinking, how everyone responded, and whether there might be another explanation.
That’s one of the reasons in-the-moment social coaching is so valuable.
Our coaches are there when the interaction happens. We can help kids slow it down, consider other perspectives, recognize their own role when appropriate, and figure out what they might do differently next time.
We’re not looking for someone to blame.
We’re helping kids learn how to understand social situations more accurately so they can handle the next one more successfully.

That’s exactly what we’re tackling in our first Simply Social Power Up™.
Simply Social Power Ups™ are new 90-minute, single-session social skills workshops focused on specific situations kids and teens need to know how to navigate.
Our first topic is:
From Classmates to Friends
Saturday, October 3
Ages 8-12: 1:00-2:30 PM
Ages 13-17: 3:00-4:30 PM
We’ll work on how to approach someone, start or join a conversation, find common ground, notice whether the other person seems interested, talk again, make plans, follow up, and understand that friendships usually develop over time.
Because sitting next to someone in math class doesn’t automatically turn them into a friend.

As kids grow, friendships change.
This can become especially noticeable around middle school. Interests change. Groups shift. Kids mature at different rates. A friendship that worked really well a year ago may suddenly feel very different.
That can be incredibly hard for a child who thought, These are my friends. Why isn’t this working anymore?
Part of developing socially is learning that not every friendship will stay the same forever, and learning what to do when one changes.
At Simply Social Kids, we help kids and teens develop the skills to navigate changing friendships, connect with new people, and keep moving forward socially when an old friendship isn’t working the way it used to.
Wondering whether our program might be a good fit for your child or teen?

That’s why we’re launching Simply Be Social™, a new occasional social opportunity at Simply Social Kids.
No social skills lesson. No formal coaching. Just time for teens to hang out, talk, laugh, and spend time with other teens in a welcoming environment.
Our weekly groups teach and coach social skills. Simply Be Social™ gives teens another opportunity to use those skills naturally while spending time with peers.
Our first event is Friday, September 25 from 6:30-8:30 PM for ages 13-17.
