More than 30 benchmark farms from 7 leading cannabis producing regions across California gathered in Berkeley this month for the release of the 2025 California Harvest Report.

🌿The gathering brought together cultivators, regional trade organizations, educators, researchers, media, and community members for conversations centered on:

• terroir
• appellations
• cultivation practices
• regional identity
• and the future of California sungrown cannabis

Origins Council was proud to participate alongside farmers, regional associations, and collaborators working to elevate and protect California’s legacy cannabis producing regions and the agricultural traditions connected to them.

For years, small and independent producers across California have helped steward regionally distinct cultivation knowledge, genetics, and farming practices shaped by place, environment, and community. Events like this help create space for those conversations to continue across regions and throughout the broader public dialogue surrounding cannabis agriculture.

Thank you to , participating farms, organizers, and all contributing partners who helped bring this gathering together!

Medical cannabis has been moved off Schedule I. Here’s what that means right now–

The DOJ has issued an order placing certain cannabis products in Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act, including “FDA-approved drug products containing ma*****na, and medicinal ma*****na products subject to a qualifying state-issued license.”

🌿Rescheduling to Schedule III acknowledges medical use and may:

• Remove 280E tax restrictions for qualifying operators
• Expand federal research access
• Shift how cannabis is handled under regulatory systems

🌿At the same time:

• Recreational cannabis remains federally illegal
• State-by-state market structures remain unchanged
• A potential federal framework may require registration with the Drug Enforcement Administration

•••

There will be an administrative hearing in June to consider broader cannabis rescheduling.

We’re tracking this closely as details unfold.
