As the school year begins we would like to wish all the students and staff a GRRRRREAT YEAR 🐯

🚨 SCHOOL ZONE SAFETY REMINDER 🚨

As students head back to school, please remember that school zones are active safety zones. Slow down, stay alert, and watch for children, parents, school buses, and crossing guards.

⚠️ School Zone Warning List:

* 🚗 Slow down and obey the posted school-zone speed limit. (20 MPH ALL DAY: Not just during pick up and drop off)

* 🛑 Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and crossing areas.

* 🚌 Stop for school buses when required by law.

* 📵 Put the phone down and eliminate distractions.

* 👀 Watch for children who may suddenly enter the roadway.

* 🚸 Obey crossing guards and follow their directions.

* 🚗 Do not pass vehicles stopped for pedestrians or school buses.

* 🅿️ Follow school drop-off/pick-up procedures and posted parking restrictions.

* 🚨 Expect increased traffic and congestion during arrival and dismissal times.

*⚠️ If there is double yellow solid lines do not cross those, please take the appropriate route to get into the parking spots you are wanting, we understand school zones can become very busy and those are in place to prevent accidents. (Hickok School specifically)

* ⚖️ Remember: School-zone traffic laws are enforced for a reason — to protect our kids.

* ⏰ Give yourself a few extra minutes, slow down, and help us keep our students safe.

🏫 One moment of patience can prevent a lifetime of regret.

🇺🇸HAPPY 250th BIRTHDAY AMERICA🇺🇸

We wish you all a Happy 4th of July and hope everyone has a safe day. With multiple great family events going on around town; we ask everyone driving to slow down and be cautious with those who are popping fireworks on city streets. For those popping fireworks we ask that you dont aim them at vehicles. Please be courteous to one another.

Remember: after you have set off your fireworks let them cool down away from any structures before tossing them in your trash cans or the dumpsters, let's prevent fires.

Temporary detour planned during paving operations on U.S. 160 in Ulysses

As resurfacing work continues along U.S. 160 in Ulysses, the Kansas Department of Transportation advises motorists to expect a temporary city detour during concrete paving operations the week of June 8.

During paving, traffic will be detoured from U.S. 160 via North Stubbs Road to Industrial Avenue to South Missouri Street. The detour is expected to last approximately 8 to 10 hours and will be removed once paving equipment is clear and driving lanes have been swept. Motorists should plan accordingly and watch for detour signage and advanced warning signs in the area. This detour is necessary to allow the contractor to pour mainline concrete pavement.

All other previously announced project restrictions remain in effect, including the 11-foot width and 75-foot length vehicle restriction and the reduced speed limit through the work zone.

Vogts-Parga Construction LLC, of Moundridge, is the contractor on this $2.5 million resurfacing project, which is anticipated to be completed by the end of July, weather permitting.

For more information, contact Joel Valdez, Area Construction Manager, at (620) 624-4451, or Yazmin Moreno, Public Information Officer, at (620) 765-7080.

The map below shows the approximate locations of the closure (outlined in red) and the detour (in blue).
