A “Reel” Emergency at the Umatilla Marina
On July 29, 2026, Detective Sergeant Capers responded to a report of a sinking boat at the Umatilla Marina. If there's a boat involved, Sgt. Capers is usually the one who gets the call. If he's not at work, chances are he's on a boat, working on a boat, or thinking about boats.

Upon arrival, he found an 18-foot Alumaweld nearly submerged. The entire bow was underwater and being held up only by the mooring lines. Thanks to the boat's built-in flotation, the transom and outboard motor remained above the water. Although the bilge pump was still running, the boat had taken on so much water that it was no longer effective. At this point, Officer Skillman immediately began coordinating with marina staff on their response.

After pulling on the bow line and realizing the boat could be lifted, Sgt. Capers called for additional help. Fortunately, the two patrol officers on duty were the perfect team for the job. Officer Martinez, our jack-of-all-trades handyman, and Officer King, a military veteran and CrossFit gym owner, responded immediately.

With a little ingenuity from the boat owner, who rigged a rope system to provide better leverage, and plenty of muscle from Officer Martinez, Officer King, Sgt. Capers, and the owners, they were able to lift the bow out of the water. Once the bow was clear, they rounded up buckets from around the dock, and the owners began bailing water until the boat was floating safely once again.

The cause of the flooding was a livewell pump that had been left on and was not draining properly. It should be noted that there was no need for an environmental impact cleanup as no fuel or oil had leaked from the boat.

We would also like to thank the Umatilla County Sheriff's Office, who sent a deputy to assist.

We had a fantastic time meeting students at Nugent Park for a fun and educational summer school event alongside the Umatilla Fire Department! We introduced students to the fascinating world of fingerprints and forensic science.

Students had the opportunity to:

· Lift their own fingerprints from objects they chose and take them home.

· Create fingerprint cards using ink pads to see the unique patterns on their own fingertips.

· Compare their fingerprints to reference cards to identify common fingerprint patterns, such as loops, whorls, and arches.

It was exciting to see so much curiosity and enthusiasm as students discovered that no two fingerprints are exactly alike! Activities like these provide a hands-on way to learn about science while giving students a glimpse into how law enforcement uses forensic evidence during investigations.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us at Nugent Park, and to our partners at the Umatilla Fire Department for helping make the day such a success. We love opportunities to connect with our community and inspire the next generation through learning and fun!

🚨 Slow Down, Umatilla 🚨
As part of the national speed enforcement effort, officers in Umatilla are increasing patrols to address speeding and aggressive driving.

👀 What this means for you:
• Increased traffic enforcement
• Extra focus on high-risk driving behaviors
• Citations for those driving over the limit

⚠️ Speeding reduces reaction time and increases crash severity. It’s not worth the risk.

Choose safety. Ease off the gas.

---
