Superintendent's Message for August 28, 2026 (Spanish & Mandarin translations link included)

Dear NHUSD Families,

If you happen to drive by Cesar Chavez Middle School, you’ll see that the turf is almost completely installed on its new field. It won’t be long before our students and the community (after school hours) can enjoy the wonderful new upgrades to that facility.

Also related to Cesar Chavez is a reminder that the renaming process is underway. We currently have a survey for members of the NHUSD community to fill out if you're interested in suggesting a name or joining the Facilities Names Committee. You can access that survey here: [Renaming Survey].

Science in the Park returns this year at CSUEB on October 3. Alameda County Supervisor Elisa Marquez is presenting this event. While this is not an NHUSD-affiliated or sponsored event, we support Ms. Marquez’s efforts to bring it back for our families. Her office is trying to determine whether or not there is interest in free transportation from our community to and from the event. If you are interested, you can complete the following form: Transportation Form. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeqL1w1Vxm7UOfKVX_vEc6Oy1BvxPB0XQ9QURTcsNhEvXFMew/viewform
You can learn more about the event using this link: Science in the Park. https://www.acscienceinthepark.org/

Congratulations to our Latino Parent Advisory Group for a fantastic presentation on August 25 in collaboration with Canada College. Over 100 community members came out to learn about financial aid for college. You can access the FAFSA recording link here.

A few upcoming parent meetings:

Sept 14- District African American Advisory group (D3A)

Sept 22- Latino Parent Advisory group

Sept 27- Punjabi Parent Advisory group Picnic.

Please look for more information to join these meetings in upcoming notifications.

That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

John Thompson, Ed.D.

💙🌎 Be Kind to Humankind Week 🌎💙

Kindness has the power to make a lasting difference. During Be Kind to Humankind Week, New Haven Unified School District encourages everyone to spread compassion through simple acts of kindness—offering a helping hand, including others, expressing gratitude, or sharing words of encouragement.

Together, we can create schools and communities where every student, staff member, and family feels seen, valued, and supported.

Let's choose kindness every day because even the smallest act can have the biggest impact.

Superintendent's Message for August 21, 2026 (Spanish & Mandarin translations link included)

Dear NHUSD Families,

I have the wonderful opportunity to watch many of the Logan High School fall sports and color guard teams in action every day because they practice behind our district office. Many have already begun competing, and fall sports schedules are available on our middle and high school websites. Catching a game to watch our student athletes in action is a great way to kick off the school year.

One of the things that makes our district special is the amount of support we receive from our parents and community. One way to get involved is to volunteer. The rules and laws around volunteering have changed, so our Personnel Department has updated the volunteer guidelines. If you are interested in volunteering and want to learn more about what is needed, use the following link: Volunteer Guidelines.

As many of you know, our Board of Education is in the process of renaming Cesar Chavez Middle School. Although we started the process last spring, it became clear we needed a more expansive and inclusive process so anyone in our community who is interested can learn what is happening and share thoughts and ideas. At their August 11 meeting, our Board of Education approved the new process. It starts with an opportunity for our community to share ideas for a new name and apply to join the Facilities Names Committee, which will review names and make recommendations to the school board. If you are interested in suggesting a name for consideration or applying to serve on the committee, complete the following form: [Click Here] http://bit.ly/4x8KNQH

That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

John Thompson, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Dear NHUSD Families,

An essential part of the beginning of every year is having parents complete the Parent Data Confirmation Process. This process is not just a formality but a crucial step that allows parents to review and update emergency contacts, ensuring the safety and well-being of our students. Please complete this process as soon as possible if you haven’t already. Your active participation in this process is greatly appreciated. Please click here to access the Parent Portal. https://newhavenusd.aeries.net/student/LoginParent.aspx
